🔧 Outback - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

You’ll remove the old front wiper blades from the wiper arms and snap new blades on. Fresh blades improve visibility and reduce streaking, chattering, and smearing in rain.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Keep the wiper arms from snapping onto the glass—this can crack the windshield.
  • ⚠️ Do not turn the ignition on while a blade is removed (the bare arm can scratch glass/paint).
  • ⚠️ Support each wiper arm with a folded towel on the windshield while you work.
  • No battery disconnect is required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Microfiber towel
  • Masking tape
  • Small flathead screwdriver

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blade - Driver: 26" - Qty: 1
  • Front wiper blade - Passenger: 18" - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and switch the ignition OFF.
  • Make sure the wipers are in the “parked” (down) position.
  • Apply masking tape marks on the windshield at the tip of each blade so you can confirm the new blades sit in the same place.
  • Lay a microfiber towel where the wiper arm could touch the glass.
  • Work one side at a time.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift the driver-side wiper arm

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Gently lift the wiper arm up until it stays raised.
  • Place a microfiber towel under the arm area on the glass as a safety cushion.

Step 2: Remove the old blade (common Subaru “push-button/top-lock” style)

  • Look at where the blade connects to the arm. Find the small release button/tab on the connector.
  • Press the tab with your thumb. If it’s tight, carefully assist with a small flathead screwdriver (a flat tip tool used to gently pry/press).
  • While holding the tab, slide the blade straight down and away from the arm to unhook it.
  • Don’t twist the arm—slide it straight.

Step 3: If your blades use a “J-hook” arm (alternate style)

  • Rotate the blade so it’s about 90 degrees to the arm.
  • Find the opening in the blade connector and slide it down toward the “hook” end.
  • Once loose, pull the blade up and off the hook.

Step 4: Install the new blade

  • Compare the new blade to the old one (same length and same connector style).
  • For push-button/top-lock: slide the new blade onto the arm connector until it clicks.
  • For J-hook: feed the hook through the connector opening, then pull the blade up until it locks/clicks.
  • Gently tug the blade to confirm it’s fully latched.

Step 5: Lower the wiper arm carefully

  • Hold the arm firmly and lower it onto the windshield gently.
  • Remove the microfiber towel and check your masking tape mark alignment.

Step 6: Repeat on the passenger side

  • Repeat Steps 1–5 for the passenger-side blade.
  • Keep one blade installed while swapping the other.

Step 7: Test the wipers

  • Spray washer fluid on the windshield.
  • Turn the wipers on low speed and confirm smooth wiping and no loose movement.

âś… After Repair

  • Remove the masking tape from the windshield.
  • Verify both blades wipe cleanly without streaks or chatter.
  • If the wipers smear, clean the glass and blade rubber with a damp microfiber towel.
