🔧 Altima - Front Wiper Blade Replacement

Replacing the front wiper blades restores clear visibility in rain and reduces streaking and chatter. On your Altima, the blades attach to the wiper arms with a common “J-hook” style connector.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Keep the wiper arm from snapping onto the glass; it can crack the windshield.
  • 🛑 Work with ignition OFF and wipers switched OFF.
  • 🛑 Set a towel on the windshield under the arm as a cushion.
  • 🛑 No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Shop towel
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades - Driver: 28", Passenger: 17" - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and turn the ignition OFF.
  • 🧼 Clean the windshield edge where the blades park with a shop towel.
  • 🧻 Lay a shop towel on the windshield under the wiper arm to protect the glass.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift the driver-side wiper arm

  • Put on safety glasses and mechanic gloves.
  • Lift the wiper arm up and away from the windshield until it stays up.
  • Keep one hand on the arm.

Step 2: Remove the old blade from the J-hook

  • At the joint where the blade meets the arm, find the small release tab.
  • Press the tab by hand; if it’s stuck, gently help it with a small flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Slide the blade down toward the base of the arm to unhook it from the “J” shape.
  • Once it’s unhooked, rotate the blade slightly and lift it off the arm.

Step 3: Install the new driver-side blade

  • Remove packaging from the new blade and confirm it’s the 28" blade.
  • Feed the wiper arm’s J-hook through the new blade’s connector opening.
  • Pull the blade up until you hear/feel a click (that click means the lock tab engaged).
  • Gently tug the blade to confirm it’s locked and won’t slide off.

Step 4: Lower the driver-side arm carefully

  • Guide the arm down by hand until the blade rests on the windshield.
  • Do not let the arm drop freely.

Step 5: Repeat on the passenger side

  • Repeat Steps 1–4 for the passenger side using the 17" blade.
  • Use the shop towel again to protect the glass while the arm is raised.

✅ After Repair

  • 🚿 Start the car and run the washers for 2–3 seconds, then run the wipers on LOW.
  • 🔍 Check for streaking, skipping, or one side not wiping (often means the blade didn’t fully click in).
  • 🧼 If they chatter, wipe the windshield with glass cleaner and a clean towel.
