How to Replace Front Windshield Wiper Blades on a 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport
Step-by-step J-hook wiper blade removal and installation with tools, blade sizes, and safety tips
🔧 Outlander Sport - Front Wiper Blade Replacement
Replacing the front wiper blades restores clear visibility and prevents the rubber from streaking or chattering on the glass. On your Outlander Sport, the front blades attach to the wiper arms with a common J-hook connector (a hook-shaped end of the wiper arm that locks into the blade).
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes
Assumption: Front blade lengths can vary; match your old blades or HowToo fitment.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Keep the wiper arm from snapping onto the glass—always lower it gently.
- ⚠️ Use a towel on the windshield where the arm could touch; the metal arm can crack glass.
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF before lifting the wiper arms.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Microfiber towel
- Small flat-blade screwdriver
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front wiper blades - Driver: 24", Passenger: 18" - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park (or in gear if manual), and turn the ignition OFF.
- Place a microfiber towel on the lower windshield area as a safety cushion.
- Identify which blade is driver vs passenger before opening packaging.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and support the wiper arm
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Lift the driver-side wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays up on its own.
- Lay a microfiber towel under the arm area on the glass. Prevents accidental glass damage.
Step 2: Unlock the old blade from the J-hook
- Rotate the wiper blade so it’s perpendicular to the wiper arm (makes the latch easier to access).
- Find the small locking tab where the blade meets the hook.
- If the tab is stiff, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to gently press the tab. (Don’t pry hard—just help it release.)
Step 3: Slide the blade off the hook
- While holding the tab, slide the blade assembly down toward the open end of the hook.
- Once it clears the hook, lift it off and set it aside.
- Keep a hand on the wiper arm so it doesn’t spring back.
Step 4: Install the new blade
- Confirm you have the correct side blade (driver vs passenger) before installing.
- Insert the J-hook through the new blade’s connector opening.
- Pull/slide the blade upward into the hook until you hear/feel a solid click (that’s the lock engaging).
- Gently tug the blade with your hand to confirm it’s locked. If it slides, it’s not latched.
Step 5: Lower the arm and repeat for the passenger side
- Lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield slowly and gently.
- Repeat Steps 1–4 for the passenger-side wiper blade using the same small flat-blade screwdriver if needed.
âś… After Repair
- Remove the microfiber towel from the windshield.
- Turn ignition ON and test the wipers at low speed first.
- Add washer fluid and spray the windshield to confirm smooth, streak-free wiping.
- If a blade chatters, clean the glass and blade rubber with a damp towel, then retest.
