🔧 GS - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

Replacing the front wiper blades restores clear visibility and prevents streaking, chatter, and windshield scratching. On your GS, the key is getting the wiper arms into “service position” so you can lift them safely without hitting the hood edge.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the car OFF before lifting wiper arms to prevent sudden movement.
  • ⚠️ Place a towel on the windshield so the bare arm can’t snap down and crack glass.
  • ⚠️ Don’t force the wiper arm higher than it wants to go—on many cars the hood edge can be in the way.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Microfiber towel
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Step stool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • 🧽 Lay a microfiber towel on the lower windshield where the wiper arms could touch.
  • 🧰 Set the wipers to service position (so they’re away from the hood): with the car OFF, press the wiper stalk to MIST (single wipe) and immediately press and hold the stalk to MIST for a few seconds until the wipers stop in the raised “service” position. If they start to move, let them stop and try again.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and support the wiper arm

  • Use a microfiber towel to protect the glass.
  • Lift the driver-side wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays up on its hinge.
  • Hold the arm with one hand. Wiper arms are spring-loaded and can snap back.

Step 2: Remove the old blade from the arm

  • Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves for hand and eye protection.
  • Locate the small plastic release tab where the blade attaches to the arm (the “adapter”).
  • Press the release tab and slide the blade downward (toward the base of the arm) to unhook it.
  • If it’s tight, wiggle the blade while keeping the tab pressed—don’t pry against the windshield.

Step 3: Install the new blade

  • Compare the new blade to the old one for matching length and connector style.
  • Slide the new blade onto the arm’s hook/connector until you hear or feel a “click.”
  • Gently tug the blade to confirm it’s locked in place.

Step 4: Repeat for the passenger side

  • Use the same method on the passenger-side arm.
  • Keep the microfiber towel in place to protect the windshield.

Step 5: Return wipers from service position

  • Lower both arms carefully back onto the windshield.
  • Turn the car ON and briefly operate the wipers once to confirm normal parking position.

âś… After Repair

  • đź’§ Spray washer fluid and run wipers at low speed to confirm no streaking or skipping.
  • 🔎 Check that each blade sits flat across the glass and doesn’t hit the hood edge.
  • 🧼 Wipe the windshield with a clean towel to remove oily film that can cause chatter.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$90 (parts + labor)
