Step-by-step guide with wiper service position tips, correct blade sizes, tools, and safety precautions

š§ Civic - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement
Replacing the front wiper blades restores clear visibility in rain and reduces windshield streaking and chatter. On your Civic, the blades clip onto the wiper arms and can be swapped in minutes once the arms are in a safe position.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Keep the wiper arm from snapping onto the glass; it can crack the windshield.
- ā ļø Turn ignition OFF before handling the wipers.
- ā ļø Set a towel on the windshield where the arm could fall.
- ā ļø Do not lift the wiper arms if they hit the hood; use āservice positionā steps below.
- Battery disconnect is not required.

š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and turn the ignition OFF.
- Lay a clean towel on the lower windshield as a safety cushion.
- If the wiper arms canāt lift because they sit under the hood edge, put the wipers into service position (shown in Step 1).
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Put the wipers in a safe position
- Try gently lifting each wiper arm away from the glass by hand.
- If the arms wonāt lift (blocked by the hood), use this service-position method:
- Turn ignition ON, then turn ignition OFF.
- Within 30 seconds, push the wiper stalk to MIST (single-wipe position) and hold briefly until the wipers move up and stop mid-windshield.
Step 2: Remove the old driver-side blade
- Lift the driver-side wiper arm up and away from the windshield.
- Rotate the blade so itās roughly perpendicular to the arm.
- Find the small locking tab at the blade-to-arm connection (this is the clip that keeps it from sliding off).
- Press the tab with your fingers; if itās stiff, use a small flathead screwdriver gently to press the tab.
- While pressing the tab, slide the blade downward (toward the base of the arm) to unhook it, then pull it off.
Step 3: Install the new driver-side blade
- Confirm the new blade length using a measuring tape (match it to the old one).
- Align the new blade connector with the wiper arm hook.
- Slide/push the blade into place until you hear/feel a click (the tab locks).
- Gently tug the blade to confirm itās locked.
- Lower the wiper arm slowly back onto the towel-covered windshield.
- Lower slowly to avoid glass damage.
Step 4: Repeat on the passenger-side blade
- Lift the passenger-side arm and remove the old blade using the same tab-and-slide method.
- Install the new blade until it clicks and wonāt slide off when lightly pulled.
- Lower the arm slowly back onto the windshield.
Step 5: Exit service position (if used)
- Turn ignition ON.
- Turn the wipers ON once, then OFF, to let them return to their normal parked position.
ā After Repair
- Remove the towel.
- Spray washer fluid and run the wipers at low speed.
- Check for streaking, skipping, or a blade that āflipsā (often means it isnāt fully clipped in).
- If the wipers chatter, clean the windshield and blade rubber with glass cleaner and a clean towel.
