How to Replace Front Windshield Wiper Blades on a 2016 GMC Canyon
Step-by-step J-hook removal/install guide with blade sizes, tools list, and safety tips

🔧 Canyon - Front Wiper Blade Replacement
Replacing the front wiper blades is a quick job that restores clear visibility in rain and prevents scratching the windshield from worn rubber. You’ll lift each wiper arm, remove the old blade from the hook-style connector, then click the new blade on.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
Assumption: Most Canyon trims use 22" driver and 18" passenger blades.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Keep a hand on the wiper arm—if it snaps down, it can crack the windshield.
- ⚠️ Don’t run the wipers “dry” on glass; it can damage the new rubber.
- ⚠️ If a blade feels stuck, don’t force it—recheck the release tab.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and turn the ignition off.
- Place a clean shop towel on the lower windshield area as a cushion.
- Lift one wiper arm at a time so you don’t mix up blade lengths.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift the driver-side wiper arm
- Lift the wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays up on its own.
- Slide the clean shop towel under the arm area for protection.
- Hold the arm—don’t let it spring back.
Step 2: Remove the old wiper blade from the J-hook
- Rotate the wiper blade so it sits roughly perpendicular (a “T” shape) to the wiper arm.
- Find the small release tab where the blade meets the hook.
- If the tab is stiff, gently help it with a small flathead screwdriver (light pressure only).
- Press the tab and slide the blade downward (toward the base of the arm) to unhook it.
- Once free, remove the blade from the arm.
- If it won’t slide, wiggle while holding the tab.
Step 3: Install the new driver-side blade
- Confirm you have the correct length (typically 22" for the driver side).
- Align the new blade’s connector with the wiper arm’s J-hook.
- Slide it onto the hook until you hear/feel a clear “click.”
- Tug lightly to confirm it’s locked.
Step 4: Lower the driver-side arm carefully
- Guide the arm down by hand until the blade rests on the windshield.
- Remove the clean shop towel if it’s in the way.
Step 5: Repeat on the passenger side
- Repeat Steps 1–4 for the passenger side (typically 18").
- Use the small flathead screwdriver only if the release tab is stubborn.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the ignition on and briefly mist the windshield with washer fluid.
- Run the wipers for 5–10 wipes and confirm they park normally and don’t chatter.
- If you see streaking, wipe the windshield edge area with a clean towel to remove film.
