🔧 Malibu - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement
Replacing the front wiper blades restores clear visibility in rain and prevents streaking or scratching the glass. On your Malibu, the blades slide off the wiper arms and the new ones click into place.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
Assumption: most Malibu LS setups use 26" driver and 16" passenger blades with a J-hook-style connector.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Don’t let the bare wiper arm snap onto the windshield; it can crack the glass.
- 🛑 Work with the engine off and keys out of the car.
- 🛑 Use a towel/cardboard on the glass for protection while blades are off.
- 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and turn the car off.
- Use a microfiber towel to wipe heavy dirt off the windshield so you don’t grind grit into the glass.
- Lay a folded microfiber towel on the windshield under the wiper area for extra protection.
- Add a small strip of painter’s tape on the glass to mark where each blade rests (optional).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift the driver-side wiper arm
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Carefully lift the driver wiper arm up and away from the windshield until it stays up.
- Place a microfiber towel under the arm area on the glass. Protects glass if arm slips.
Step 2: Remove the old driver-side blade
- Rotate the blade so it’s roughly perpendicular (90°) to the wiper arm.
- Find the small release tab/clip where the blade connects to the arm.
- Press the release tab with your gloved thumb, then slide the blade down and off the hook.
- If it’s stubborn, keep the tab pressed and wiggle the blade while sliding it off.
Step 3: Install the new driver-side blade
- Remove the new blade from its packaging.
- If your new blade includes adapter pieces, use the one that matches the arm connection (most are “J-hook”).
- Slide the new blade onto the hook until it clicks/locks.
- Gently tug the blade to confirm it’s locked in place.
Step 4: Lower the driver-side arm safely
- Hold the arm with your hand and slowly lower it back onto the windshield.
- Remove the microfiber towel from the glass.
Step 5: Repeat on the passenger side
- Use the same process for the passenger wiper blade (typically shorter).
- Use the step stool if you need stable reach—don’t lean on the glass.
Step 6: Quick alignment check
- Remove any painter’s tape marks.
- Visually confirm both blades sit evenly on the glass and are fully seated on the arms.
âś… After Repair
- Start the car and run the washers, then run the wipers for 10–15 seconds.
- Confirm there’s no skipping, chattering, or missed areas.
- If a blade chatters, clean the windshield with glass cleaner and wipe the rubber edge with a damp towel.
