How to Replace Front Windshield Wiper Blades on a 2016 Audi Q3 (Service Position)
Step-by-step instructions, wiper service position tips, correct blade sizes, tools, and safety precautions
🔧 Q3 - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement
Replacing the front wiper blades restores clear visibility and reduces streaking and chatter. On your Q3, the key is putting the wiper arms into the “service position” so you can lift them safely without hitting the hood.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the hinge; the spring-loaded arm can snap back hard.
- ⚠️ Put a towel on the windshield; a bare metal arm can crack glass if it drops.
- ⚠️ Don’t lift the arms unless they’re in service position; they can contact the hood edge.
- ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn the wipers OFF and remove the key (or switch ignition OFF).
- Place a microfiber towel on the lower windshield area as a safety cushion.
- Move wipers to service position using ONE of the methods below.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Put the wipers in service position
- Method A (stalk method): Turn ignition OFF, then within about 10–15 seconds press the wiper stalk down once (single wipe). The wipers should park upright for service.
- Method B (MMI method, if equipped): Use the center screen/menu and select CAR > Settings > Wipers > Service position.
- Use a step stool if needed so you don’t lean on the windshield.
Step 2: Lift one wiper arm carefully
- Use nitrile gloves for grip and to keep oils off the rubber.
- Lift the arm slowly until it stays up on its hinge.
- Keep the microfiber towel under the work area as protection.
Step 3: Remove the old blade from the arm
- Locate the connector where the blade meets the arm.
- Press the small release tab on the blade connector (this is the “lock” that holds it on).
- Slide the blade downward/off the arm hook until it releases.
- Tip: Do one side at a time.
Step 4: Install the new blade
- Compare the new blade length to the old one before installing.
- Slide the new blade onto the arm connector until you hear/feel a click.
- Gently tug the blade to confirm it’s locked in place.
Step 5: Lower the arm gently and repeat on the other side
- Lower the arm carefully onto the glass—don’t let it drop.
- Repeat Steps 2–4 for the other front wiper.
Step 6: Exit service position
- Turn ignition ON and briefly turn the wipers on, then off, to park them normally.
- If you used the menu method, toggle CAR > Settings > Wipers > Service position back off (if the menu shows it).
âś… After Repair
- Spray washer fluid and run the wipers for 10–15 seconds to confirm smooth wiping and no streaks.
- If you see streaking, wipe the windshield with glass cleaner and a microfiber towel.
- Confirm both blades sit flat on the glass and don’t hit the hood edge.
