🔧 A6 - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

You’ll put the wiper arms into “service position,” remove the old blades from the arm hooks, and snap on new blades. Doing it this way prevents the wiper arms from hitting the hood edge and makes the blades easy to access.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Keep fingers clear of the wiper arm spring—if it snaps down it can crack the windshield.
  • 🛑 Put a folded towel on the windshield where the arm could land.
  • 🛑 Only lift the wiper arms once they’re in service position to avoid scratching the hood.
  • 🔌 Battery disconnect is not required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Clean towel
  • Step stool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and turn the engine off.
  • Place a clean towel on the lower edge of the windshield as a cushion.
  • Assumption: Your A6 uses the factory-style push-button/top-lock wiper connection common on this model; your new blades should include the correct adapter.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Move the wipers to service position

  • Turn the ignition on, then turn it off.
  • Within about 10–15 seconds, push the wiper stalk down once (single wipe) to command service position.
  • The wiper arms should park partway up the windshield where you can lift them safely.
  • If they don’t move, repeat the ignition off + stalk down.

Step 2: Lift the driver-side wiper arm

  • Use your hands (with nitrile gloves) to gently lift the driver-side arm away from the glass.
  • Use the clean towel under the arm area as protection.

Step 3: Remove the old blade from the arm

  • Rotate the blade so it’s perpendicular to the wiper arm for better access.
  • Find the small release tab/button on the blade adapter (this is the locking clip that holds the blade to the arm).
  • Press the tab with your thumb and slide the blade downward/off the arm connection.
  • If it’s tight, wiggle the blade while keeping the tab pressed.

Step 4: Install the new blade

  • Compare the new blade to the old one (same length, same connector style).
  • Slide the new blade onto the arm connection until you hear/feel a solid click.
  • Gently tug the blade to confirm it’s locked.

Step 5: Repeat on the passenger side

  • Repeat Steps 2–4 for the passenger-side wiper.
  • Keep the clean towel in place to protect the windshield.

Step 6: Return wipers from service position

  • Carefully lower both arms back onto the windshield.
  • Turn ignition on and briefly tap the wiper stalk to run the wipers once; they should return to normal parked position.

âś… After Repair

  • Spray washer fluid and run the wipers to confirm smooth, quiet wiping.
  • Check that both blades fully contact the glass and don’t chatter.
  • If there’s streaking, clean the windshield with glass cleaner and a microfiber towel.
