šŸ”§ A3 - Front Wiper Blade Replacement

You’ll remove the old wiper blades from the wiper arms and snap new blades on. On your A3, you should use the built-in ā€œservice positionā€ so the wiper arms can lift safely without hitting the hood edge.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Keep the wiper arms from snapping onto the glass; they can crack the windshield.
  • āš ļø Turn ignition OFF before lifting wiper arms.
  • āš ļø Place a towel on the lower windshield as a cushion.
  • āš ļø No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Microfiber towel
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition OFF.
  • Put the wipers in service position using the stalk: with ignition OFF, press the wiper stalk down once within about 10 seconds to move the wipers up for blade access.
  • Place a microfiber towel along the lower windshield area under the wiper arms.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Move the wipers to service position

  • Turn ignition ON, then turn ignition OFF.
  • Within about 10 seconds, press the wiper stalk down once to command service position.
  • Verify both wiper arms are parked higher up on the windshield where you can lift them.

Step 2: Lift the driver-side wiper arm

  • Use a microfiber towel to protect the glass at the base area.
  • Carefully lift the wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays up.
  • Hold the arm anytime it feels springy.

Step 3: Remove the old blade

  • Look where the blade connects to the arm; it’s a clip-style connector.
  • Press the release tab on the connector and slide the blade off the arm.
  • If the tab is stiff, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently help press the tab.
  • A ā€œrelease tabā€ is a small plastic latch that unlocks the blade from the arm.

Step 4: Install the new blade

  • Align the new blade’s connector with the wiper arm hook/adapter.
  • Slide or snap it into place until you hear/feel a click.
  • Gently tug the blade to confirm it’s locked on.

Step 5: Lower the wiper arm carefully

  • Guide the wiper arm back down using your hand.
  • Do not let it drop onto the windshield.

Step 6: Repeat on the passenger side

  • Repeat Steps 2–5 for the passenger-side blade.

Step 7: Exit service position

  • Turn ignition ON.
  • Tap the wiper stalk to run the wipers once, or turn the ignition OFF to let them park normally.
  • Remove the microfiber towel from the windshield.

āœ… After Repair

  • Run the windshield washer and wipers for a few swipes to confirm smooth, quiet operation.
  • Check that both blades wipe evenly with no streaking or chatter.
  • If you see skipping, clean the windshield with glass cleaner and a microfiber towel.
