🔧 GLC - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement
You’ll put the wiper arms into “service position” so they lift safely away from the hood, then slide the old blades off and click the new ones on. This restores clear wiping and helps prevent streaking and windshield scratching.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
Assumption: your GLC uses factory-style hook/adapter blades; buy blades matched by application.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of hinge points while lifting the wiper arms.
- ⚠️ Never let a bare wiper arm snap onto the windshield; it can crack the glass. Place a towel on the windshield as a cushion.
- ⚠️ Do not turn the wipers on while blades are removed.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Clean microfiber towel
- Small flathead screwdriver
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front wiper blades (vehicle-specific fitment) - Qty: 2
- Windshield washer fluid - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and turn the engine off.
- Lay a clean microfiber towel across the lower edge of the windshield to protect the glass.
- Move the wipers to service position using ONE of the methods below (use whichever your GLC shows):
- 🧭 Method A (stalk sequence): Turn ignition ON, then OFF. Within a few seconds, press the wiper stalk down to the “single wipe” position and hold briefly until the arms move up to service position.
- 🧭 Method B (screen menu): Use the steering wheel buttons to open Service or Vehicle settings and select Wipers > Service position (wording varies).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift the wiper arms safely
- Confirm the arms are in service position (they should be away from the hood edge).
- Lift the driver-side arm up and away from the windshield until it stays up.
- Place the clean microfiber towel under the arm area as a backup protector.
Step 2: Remove the old wiper blade
- Rotate the wiper blade so it’s roughly perpendicular to the arm (this gives you room to work).
- Find the small locking tab where the blade connects to the arm.
- Press the tab with your thumb; if it’s stubborn, gently help it with a small flathead screwdriver. Don’t pry hard—plastic breaks easily.
- Slide the blade down and off the arm hook/adapter.
Step 3: Install the new wiper blade
- Remove the new blade from packaging and confirm it’s the correct side (some kits are labeled driver/passenger).
- Slide the new blade onto the arm hook/adapter until it fully seats.
- Pull lightly on the blade to confirm it’s locked in place.
Step 4: Repeat for the other side
- Repeat Steps 1–3 for the passenger-side blade.
- Keep the clean microfiber towel in place until both blades are installed.
Step 5: Return wipers from service position
- Gently lower each wiper arm back onto the windshield.
- Exit service position using the same method you used to enter it:
- If you used the stalk: turn ignition ON and briefly tap the wiper stalk to run a quick wipe.
- If you used the menu: toggle Wipers > Service position back OFF.
✅ After Repair
- Fill washer fluid if low using windshield washer fluid.
- Test: with ignition ON, spray washer fluid and run wipers for 5–10 seconds.
- If you hear chatter or see streaks, clean the windshield and blades with a damp microfiber towel, then retest.
- Make sure both blades park correctly at the bottom when turned off.
