How to Replace Front Windshield Wiper Blades on a 2015 Toyota Tacoma
Step-by-step removal and installation guide with tools, parts options (blade vs refill), and safety tips
🔧 Tacoma - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement
On your Tacoma, replacing the front wiper blades restores clear visibility and prevents the metal wiper arm from scraping the glass. You can replace the entire blade assemblies, or (on many Toyota blades) replace just the rubber “refill” insert.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Do not let the wiper arm snap onto the windshield; it can crack the glass.
- ⚠️ Keep a towel under the wiper arm while the blade is off.
- ⚠️ If the wipers were just used, make sure the windshield is not hot to the touch.
- ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Clean microfiber towel
- Small flathead screwdriver

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and turn the ignition off.
- Lift each wiper arm up off the windshield until it stays up.
- Place a clean microfiber towel on the windshield under each wiper arm.
- Use a tape measure or ruler to measure the current blades so you buy the exact same lengths. Match lengths left-to-right.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the old wiper blade (hook-style arm)
- Lift the wiper arm away from the windshield.
- Hold the arm with one hand and use your other hand to rotate the blade so it’s roughly perpendicular to the arm.
- Find the small release tab/clip where the blade connects to the arm.
- If the tab is stiff, carefully help it with a small flathead screwdriver (a flathead screwdriver is a straight, flat-tipped pry tool).
- While pressing the release tab, slide the blade down and off the hook.
Step 2: Protect the windshield while the blade is off
- Gently lower the bare wiper arm until it rests on the clean microfiber towel.
- Do not let the arm spring down on its own.
Step 3: Install the new blade assembly
- Lift the wiper arm back up.
- Line up the new blade’s connector with the hook on the wiper arm.
- Slide the hook into the connector until you hear/feel a click.
- Gently tug the blade with your hand to confirm it’s locked on.
- Lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield carefully.
Step 4: Repeat on the other side
- Use the same process for the other front wiper.
- Use the tape measure or ruler to confirm each side matches the original length before installing.
Step 5: Optional (if using Toyota-style rubber refills instead of full blades)
- Remove the blade from the arm using the steps above.
- On a work surface, locate the end cap/retainer on the blade and carefully pry it open with a small flathead screwdriver.
- Slide the old rubber insert out, noting how the metal rails are positioned.
- Transfer the metal rails to the new rubber insert (if required), then slide the new insert in the same direction it came out.
- Reinstall the end cap/retainer, then reinstall the blade onto the arm.
✅ After Repair
- Start the truck and test the wipers with washer fluid.
- Check for skipping, streaking, or chattering.
- Wipe the windshield with a clean towel if it has wax/oil film. Clean glass helps new blades.
