🔧 Highlander - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement
Replacing the front wiper blades is a quick job that restores clear visibility in rain. On your Highlander, it’s easiest if you first put the wipers into “service position” so the arms are raised up off the hood.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Don’t let the wiper arm snap onto the glass; it can crack the windshield.
- 🛑 Lift the wiper arm carefully—stop if it feels stuck against the hood.
- 🛑 Keep fingers clear of the hinge area (it can pinch).
- Battery disconnect is not required.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Small flat-blade screwdriver
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front wiper blades - Driver: 26", Passenger: 20" - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to P.
- Turn the ignition to ON, then turn it OFF.
- Within about 45 seconds, move and hold the wiper stalk to MIST (up) for ~2 seconds to put the wipers in service position (they’ll stop partway up the windshield).
- Service position = arms safely lifted for blade removal.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Put the wipers in service position
- Use the wiper stalk: ignition ON then OFF, then hold to MIST for ~2 seconds.
- Confirm both wiper arms stop up on the glass where you can lift them.
Step 2: Lift the wiper arm
- Wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Lift one wiper arm off the windshield until it stays up.
- Place a folded towel on glass if desired.
Step 3: Remove the old wiper blade
- Locate the small release tab at the blade’s connector (where it meets the arm’s hook).
- Press the tab with your thumb; if it’s stubborn, use a small flat-blade screwdriver gently.
- While holding the tab, slide the blade down and off the hook.
Step 4: Install the new wiper blade
- Confirm you have the correct blade length for that side: Driver 26" / Passenger 20".
- Align the new blade’s connector with the wiper arm hook.
- Slide it into place until you hear/feel a click and it won’t pull back off.
Step 5: Lower the arm carefully
- Lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield slowly.
- Repeat Steps 2–5 on the other side.
Step 6: Exit service position
- Turn the ignition to ON.
- Use the wiper stalk to run the wipers once, then turn them OFF so they park normally.
âś… After Repair
- Test with washer fluid: pull the stalk to spray and run the wipers.
- Make sure both blades wipe smoothly and don’t chatter or leave unwiped streaks.
- If a blade streaks, clean the windshield edge-to-edge and re-check the blade is fully clicked in.
