🔧 Legacy - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

Replacing your front wiper blades restores clear visibility in rain and helps prevent streaking and chatter. On your Legacy, the only “tricky” part is getting the wiper arms into a safe service position so you don’t stress the hood edge or the wiper linkage.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the hinge; the wiper arm spring snaps down hard.
  • ⚠️ Put a towel on the lower windshield/cowl area to prevent scratches.
  • ⚠️ Don’t run the wipers “dry”; use washer fluid if testing on glass.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Clean microfiber towel
  • Step stool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades - Driver: 26", Passenger: 18" - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Turn the ignition OFF.
  • Lay a clean microfiber towel along the lower windshield/cowl area.
  • Wiper service position (to lift arms safely): Turn ignition ON, then OFF, then within ~10 seconds move the wiper stalk to MIST (single-wipe) a couple of times until the wipers stop in the “up” service position. If they don’t move, skip to lifting carefully.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the wipers to service position

  • Use the ignition key/start button to turn ignition ON, then OFF.
  • Use the wiper stalk and tap MIST a couple of times to park the arms in the raised service position.
  • Use a step stool if needed so you don’t lean on the glass.

Step 2: Lift the driver wiper arm

  • Lift the driver-side arm away from the windshield with your hand.
  • Place the microfiber towel under the arm area as extra protection.
  • Hold the arm—don’t let it snap down.

Step 3: Remove the old driver wiper blade

  • Rotate the blade so it’s roughly perpendicular (90°) to the wiper arm.
  • Find the small release tab on the blade adapter.
  • Press the tab with your thumb; if it’s tight, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently press the tab.
  • Slide the blade down and off the arm’s hook.

Step 4: Install the new driver wiper blade

  • Align the new blade’s adapter with the wiper arm hook.
  • Slide it on until you hear/feel a solid “click” lock.
  • Gently tug the blade to confirm it’s latched.

Step 5: Repeat for the passenger side

  • Lift the passenger-side arm by hand.
  • Press the release tab (use the small flathead screwdriver only if needed).
  • Slide the old blade off, then slide the new one on until it clicks.

Step 6: Lower the arms carefully

  • Rotate each blade back to its normal position on the arm.
  • Lower each arm gently onto the windshield by hand.
  • Remove the microfiber towel.

Step 7: Exit service position and function-check

  • Turn ignition ON.
  • Use the wiper stalk to run the wipers on LOW for a few sweeps.
  • Use the washer to wet the glass and confirm no streaking, skipping, or unusual noise.

✅ After Repair

  • Verify both blades park normally at the bottom of the windshield.
  • Top off washer fluid if it’s low.
  • If you see streaks immediately, wipe the windshield edge with a clean towel; oily film can mimic bad blades.
