🔧 GLA - Front Wiper Blade Replacement

You’ll put the wiper arms into a safe “service position,” remove the old blades, and snap on new ones. This matters because worn blades reduce visibility and can scratch the windshield.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Keep the ignition OFF when your fingers are near the wiper linkage.
  • ⚠️ Don’t let the wiper arm “snap” onto the glass—always rest it on a towel.
  • ⚠️ Use wiper service position so the hood edge doesn’t interfere.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Microfiber towel
  • Plastic trim tool
  • Step stool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades (OE-style, correct lengths for your GLA) - Qty: 2
  • Windshield washer fluid - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
  • Have a microfiber towel ready to protect the windshield.
  • Service position prevents hood interference.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Put the wipers into “service position”

  • Use the start/stop button to turn ignition ON (do not start the engine).
  • Use the start/stop button again to turn ignition OFF.
  • Within about 15 seconds, use the wiper stalk to command a single wipe (press/hold to the “mist” position). The wiper arms should move up and stop where you can safely lift them.
  • If they don’t stop up, repeat the ON → OFF → single-wipe sequence.

Step 2: Protect the windshield

  • Place a microfiber towel on the windshield directly under the wiper arm area.
  • This is your “cushion” in case the arm springs back.

Step 3: Lift the driver-side wiper arm

  • Carefully raise the wiper arm off the glass until it stays up on its hinge.
  • Use a step stool if you need better reach and control.

Step 4: Remove the old wiper blade

  • At the joint where the blade connects to the arm, use a plastic trim tool to press the small locking tab (a tab is a small catch that holds parts together).
  • While holding the tab, slide the wiper blade down and away from the arm hook/connector until it releases.
  • If it’s tight, wiggle gently while keeping the tab pressed—don’t twist hard.

Step 5: Install the new driver-side blade

  • Align the new blade’s connector with the wiper arm end.
  • Slide it into place until you hear/feel a firm “click.”
  • Gently tug on the blade to confirm it’s locked.

Step 6: Repeat on the passenger-side

  • Use the same process: lift arm, press tab with the plastic trim tool, slide old blade off, slide new blade on until it clicks.
  • Passenger blade is usually a different length.

Step 7: Lower the wiper arms safely

  • Lower each wiper arm back onto the windshield slowly and gently.
  • Remove the microfiber towel.

Step 8: Exit service position

  • Use the start/stop button to turn ignition ON.
  • Use the wiper stalk to run the wipers once, then turn them OFF so they park normally.

✅ After Repair

  • Top off washer fluid if needed.
  • Test the wipers with washer spray and confirm there’s no skipping, streaking, or chatter.
  • If you get streaks right away, clean the windshield with glass cleaner and a fresh towel.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $25-$70 (parts only)

You Save: $35-$70 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
