🔧 CX-5 - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement
You’ll replace the two front wiper blade inserts/assemblies on your CX-5 so they wipe cleanly without streaks or skipping. The key is getting the wiper arms into a safe position and not letting a bare wiper arm snap onto the glass.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Don’t let the wiper arm snap onto the windshield—put a towel on the glass while working.
- ⚠️ Work with the engine OFF and key away from the vehicle so the wipers can’t move unexpectedly.
- ⚠️ If the blades are under the hood edge, use wiper “service position” before lifting arms.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and switch the ignition OFF.
- Place a microfiber towel on the lower windshield area as a safety cushion.
- If your wipers sit low under the hood edge, put them into service position first (steps below).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Put the wipers in service position (if needed)
- Use your hands to sit in the driver seat and switch ignition to ON, then OFF.
- Within 30 seconds, use the wiper stalk and push it to the MIST (single wipe) position two times. The wipers should move up and stop where you can lift them. If it doesn’t work, skip to Step 2.
Step 2: Lift the driver-side wiper arm
- Use your hands (gloves on) to gently lift the wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays up.
- Keep the microfiber towel on the glass underneath as protection.
Step 3: Remove the old blade from the arm
- Use your fingers to find the small release tab where the blade connects to the arm (this is the “adapter,” the plastic connector piece).
- Press the tab and slide the blade down/off the hook/connector until it releases.
- Set the old blade aside, and carefully lower the arm only if needed—don’t let it snap down.
Step 4: Install the new driver-side blade
- Use your hands to line up the new 24" blade’s adapter with the wiper arm connector.
- Slide it on until you hear/feel a solid click, then lightly tug the blade to confirm it’s locked.
Step 5: Repeat for the passenger-side blade
- Use your hands to lift the passenger wiper arm.
- Remove the old blade the same way (press tab, slide off).
- Install the new 18" blade until it clicks, then tug-check it.
Step 6: Return wipers to normal position
- Use your hands to gently lower both arms back onto the windshield.
- If you used service position, switch ignition ON and do one normal wipe, or switch ignition OFF and the next wiper use will re-park them normally.
âś… After Repair
- Test with windshield washer fluid and run the wipers at low speed to confirm no skipping or clacking.
- If one blade chatters, clean the windshield and blade rubber with a damp microfiber towel.
- Recheck that each blade is fully clipped in if anything looks crooked.
