šŸ”§ Escape - Front Wiper Blade Replacement

On your Escape, the front wiper arms sit low near the hood, so you usually need to move the wipers into a ā€œservice positionā€ before the arms will lift up safely. Then you’ll release the old blades from the arm, snap the new ones on, and confirm they wipe clean without streaking.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Keep fingers clear of the hinge area while moving the wiper arms.
  • āš ļø Never let a bare wiper arm snap onto the windshield; it can crack the glass.
  • āš ļø Turn ignition OFF before handling the blades (after setting service position).
  • āš ļø Use a towel/cardboard under the arm if a blade is removed.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Microfiber towel
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades (match your current blade length and connector type) - Qty: 2

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Escape on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Turn the wipers OFF (stalk in the OFF position).
  • Have a microfiber towel ready to protect the windshield if a blade is removed.
  • If your Escape requires it, set the wipers to service position before lifting the arms.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Put the wipers in service position (so the arms can lift)

  • Use the start button or key to switch the ignition to ON (engine can stay off), then switch it OFF.
  • Within a few seconds, use the wiper stalk and try this common Ford sequence: move the stalk to a single wipe (down) and hold briefly until the wipers move up the windshield.
  • If your Escape doesn’t respond, use your owner’s manual ā€œwiper service positionā€ procedure (the goal is simply to park the wipers away from the hood so the arms can lift).
  • Don’t force the arm up if it hits the hood.

Step 2: Lift the wiper arms safely

  • Lift one wiper arm up and away from the windshield.
  • Place a microfiber towel on the glass under the arm as protection.

Step 3: Remove the old wiper blade

  • Look at the connection where the blade meets the arm.
  • Most blades use a ā€œJ-hookā€ arm (a hook-shaped end). A J-hook is the curved metal end of the wiper arm that hooks into the blade adapter.
  • Press the small release tab with your fingers; if it’s stuck, gently help it with a small flathead screwdriver (do not pry hard).
  • Slide the blade down toward the base of the arm to unhook it, then remove it.

Step 4: Install the new wiper blade

  • Match the new blade’s connector to the arm style (most replacement blades include adapters).
  • Hook the new blade onto the arm and slide it until it clicks/locks.
  • Gently tug the blade with your hand to confirm it’s locked in place.

Step 5: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat removal/installation on the other front wiper using the same steps.

Step 6: Return the wipers from service position

  • Lower both wiper arms back onto the windshield carefully.
  • Turn the ignition ON, then use the wiper stalk to run the wipers once; they should park back in their normal resting spot.

āœ… After Repair

  • Test wipers on low speed, then high speed, using washer fluid.
  • Confirm both blades wipe clean and don’t hit the hood/trim.
  • If you see skipping/chatter, clean the windshield with glass cleaner and a microfiber towel, then retest.
