🔧 Silverado 1500 - Front Wiper Blade Replacement

You’ll replace the rubber wiper blade assemblies on the two front wiper arms. Fresh blades restore clear wiping and reduce streaking, chatter, and smearing in rain.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before lifting the wiper arms.
  • ⚠️ Do not let a wiper arm snap back onto the windshield; it can crack the glass. Put a towel on the windshield under the arm.
  • ⚠️ Don’t lift the arms higher than needed; wiper arms are spring-loaded and can bend.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Clean towel
  • Step stool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades - Driver: 22", Passenger: 22" - Qty: 2
  • Windshield washer fluid - Qty: 1 (optional)

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Make sure the wipers are in their “parked” down position (not mid-swipe).
  • Place a clean towel on the windshield under the wiper you’re working on.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift the wiper arm safely

  • Use a step stool if needed to reach comfortably.
  • Lift the wiper arm up until it stays up on its own.
  • Keep the clean towel on the glass under the arm. Prevents damage if it slips.

Step 2: Identify the attachment type

  • Look where the blade meets the arm.
  • You’ll have either a J-hook style (a curved “J” hook) or a pinch-tab style (two small squeeze tabs). “Pinch-tab” means you squeeze the tabs to unlock it.

Step 3A: Remove the old blade (J-hook style)

  • Rotate the blade so it’s roughly perpendicular (a 90° angle) to the wiper arm.
  • With your gloved hand, push the blade up toward the hook, then slide it down and out of the hook.
  • If it’s stubborn, wiggle it while sliding—don’t pry on the windshield.

Step 3B: Remove the old blade (pinch-tab style)

  • Press the two locking tabs on the connector using your fingers with mechanic gloves.
  • While holding the tabs, slide the blade straight off the end of the arm.

Step 4: Install the new blade

  • Compare the new blade to the old one (same length, same connector style).
  • J-hook: Slide the new blade connector into the hook and pull it until you hear/feel a click.
  • Pinch-tab: Slide the new blade onto the arm until it clicks/locks in place.
  • Gently tug the blade to confirm it’s fully latched. If it slides off, re-seat it.

Step 5: Lower the arm and repeat on the other side

  • Carefully lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield.
  • Move the clean towel and repeat Steps 1–4 for the other front wiper.

âś… After Repair

  • Start your A/C off and turn the wipers on low to confirm smooth, quiet wiping.
  • Use washer spray and verify both blades clear evenly with no streaks.
  • If one blade chatters, clean the windshield and blade rubber with a damp towel, then re-test.
