🔧 1500 - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

You’ll remove the old wiper blades from the wiper arms and click new blades into place. This restores clear vision in rain and prevents the metal arm from scratching the windshield.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the wipers OFF and keep the key out while working.
  • ⚠️ Do not let the bare wiper arm snap onto the glass; it can crack the windshield.
  • ⚠️ Lift and lower each arm gently, holding it the whole time.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Shop towel
  • Cardboard sheet (windshield protector)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Windshield washer fluid - Qty: 1 gallon

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park the truck on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
  • Make sure the wiper arms are in their “parked” position at the bottom of the windshield.
  • Place a cardboard sheet or shop towel on the windshield under the wiper area for protection.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm your replacement blades match

  • Use a shop towel to wipe the blade and read the length printed on the old blade packaging or blade (if present).
  • If no length is visible, compare the new blades side-by-side with the old ones before installing.
  • Replace both blades together for even wiping.

Step 2: Lift the first wiper arm safely

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Lift the wiper arm up and away from the windshield, then slide a cardboard sheet (windshield protector) underneath it.
  • Keep one hand holding the arm so it can’t spring back.

Step 3: Remove the old wiper blade

  • Most 1500 wiper arms use a J-hook attachment (the arm end looks like a “J”).
  • Rotate the blade so it’s roughly perpendicular to the arm.
  • Press the small release tab on the blade adapter and slide the blade down and off the hook.
  • Set the old blade aside and keep holding the arm up.

Step 4: Install the new wiper blade

  • Slide the new blade’s adapter onto the J-hook until it seats fully.
  • Pull lightly on the blade to confirm it’s locked (you should feel/hear a click).
  • Rotate the blade back into its normal position in line with the arm.

Step 5: Lower the wiper arm gently

  • Remove the cardboard sheet (windshield protector).
  • Lower the arm back onto the windshield slowly, still supporting it with your hand.

Step 6: Repeat for the other side

  • Repeat Steps 2–5 for the other front wiper blade.

✅ After Repair

  • Top off with windshield washer fluid if needed.
  • Start the truck and test low/high wiper speeds and the washer spray.
  • If a blade chatters or streaks, clean the glass with a damp shop towel and retest.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$90 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $20-$60 (parts only)

You Save: $20-$30 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.4 hours.
