How to Replace Front Windshield Wiper Blades on a 2013-2016 Mazda CX-5
Step-by-step wiper blade removal and installation with tools, parts, fitment tips, and safety precautions for 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016
🔧 CX-5 - Front Wiper Blade Replacement
Replacing the front wiper blades is a quick job: you’ll lift each wiper arm, release the blade from the arm, and snap the new blade on. Fresh blades restore clear wiping and help prevent windshield scratches from worn rubber.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Don’t let the bare wiper arm snap onto the windshield—place a towel on the glass as protection.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the hinge area when lowering the arm.
- ⚠️ Work with the ignition OFF so the wipers can’t move unexpectedly.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Mechanic gloves
- Microfiber towel
- Flathead screwdriver (small)
- Step stool (optional)

- Front wiper blades (driver + passenger, match your current lengths) - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
- Put a microfiber towel on the lower windshield area under each wiper arm.
- Look at how the blade attaches to the arm. The plastic connector is called an adapter (it’s the piece that clips to the wiper arm).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift the driver-side wiper arm
- Lift the arm up until it stays up on its own (use mechanic gloves for grip).
- Confirm the microfiber towel is protecting the glass below the arm.
Step 2: Release the old blade from the wiper arm
- Rotate the blade so it sits roughly perpendicular to the arm.
- Find the small locking tab on the adapter.
- Press the tab with your thumb; if it’s stuck, gently help it with a flathead screwdriver (small). Don’t pry hard—plastic breaks easily.
- While the tab is pressed, slide the blade down and off the end of the arm.
Step 3: Install the new blade on the arm
- Make sure the new blade’s adapter matches the arm’s connector (most new blades include multiple adapters).
- Slide the new blade onto the arm the same direction the old one came off.
- Push until you hear/feel a solid “click” indicating the lock tab engaged.
- Gently tug the blade to confirm it’s locked in place (use mechanic gloves).
Step 4: Lower the driver-side arm carefully
- Hold the arm firmly and lower it onto the windshield (do not let it drop).
- Remove the microfiber towel.
Step 5: Repeat on the passenger-side
- Repeat Steps 1–4 for the passenger-side blade (use mechanic gloves and the microfiber towel again).
âś… After Repair
- Add windshield washer fluid if it’s low, then test the wipers at low speed.
- If you see streaking, clean the windshield with glass cleaner and a microfiber towel, then retest.
- If a blade chatters, re-check that it fully “clicked” into the arm.
