🔧 Impreza - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

Replacing the front wiper blades is a quick maintenance job that restores clear visibility in rain. You’ll remove the old blades from the wiper arms and click new ones into place, then test for smooth, streak-free wiping.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

Assumption: Your Impreza uses the common J-hook style front wiper arm.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the hinge points; the spring-loaded wiper arm can snap back.
  • ⚠️ Do not let the bare wiper arm hit the glass—place a towel on the windshield while swapping blades.
  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF before lifting the wiper arms.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Clean microfiber towel
  • Step stool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades - Driver: 26", Passenger: 16" - Qty: 2
  • Windshield washer fluid - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and turn the ignition OFF.
  • Lift each front wiper arm up away from the windshield.
  • Place a clean microfiber towel on the windshield under the blade area as protection.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and protect the wiper arm

  • Use a clean microfiber towel to cover the glass under the wiper blade.
  • Carefully lift the wiper arm up until it stays up on its own.
  • Tip: Hold the arm anytime it’s unhooked.

Step 2: Remove the old blade from the J-hook

  • With nitrile gloves on, rotate the blade so it sits perpendicular (a 90° angle) to the wiper arm.
  • Find the small release tab/clip where the blade meets the hook.
  • Press the tab with your thumb, then slide the blade down toward the open end of the hook to unclip it.
  • Once free, remove the blade completely and set it aside.

Step 3: Install the new blade

  • Compare the new blade length to the old one (driver is longer than passenger).
  • Slide the new blade’s connector onto the wiper arm’s J-hook until it clicks/locks.
  • Gently tug on the blade to confirm it’s fully latched.
  • Tip: If it doesn’t click, it isn’t locked.

Step 4: Lower the wiper arm safely

  • Hold the wiper arm and lower it back onto the windshield gently.
  • Remove the clean microfiber towel.

Step 5: Repeat for the other side

  • Use the same process for the other front wiper blade.
  • Use a step stool if needed for comfortable reach.

✅ After Repair

  • Top off washer fluid if needed using windshield washer fluid.
  • Start the car and test the wipers on low speed with washer spray.
  • If you see streaks or skipping, clean the windshield and blade rubber with a damp clean microfiber towel.
