🔧 F-150 - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement
Replacing the front wiper blades restores clear visibility in rain and reduces streaking and chatter. On your F-150, the blades attach to the wiper arms with a common “J-hook” style connector, so this is a quick DIY job.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Turn the ignition OFF and keep hands clear of the wiper linkage.
- 🛑 Don’t let a bare wiper arm snap onto the glass; it can crack the windshield.
- 🛑 Work on a cool windshield to avoid burns and to prevent glass stress.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park your F-150 on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
- Lift each wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays up.
- Place a microfiber towel on the lower edge of the windshield as a cushion.
- Add a short strip of painter’s tape on the glass where the blade normally rests to help you put the new blade back in the same spot.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the driver-side wiper blade
- Use work gloves and safety glasses.
- With the wiper arm lifted, rotate the wiper blade so it’s roughly perpendicular to the arm (this gives you room to unhook it).
- Find the small release tab where the blade meets the arm (this is the latch on the “J-hook,” which is a hook-shaped end of the wiper arm).
- Press the release tab with your fingers; if it’s stuck, gently help it with a small flathead screwdriver.
- Slide the blade down toward the base of the arm to unhook it, then pull it off the J-hook.
- Tip: Keep one hand on the arm.
Step 2: Install the new driver-side wiper blade
- Confirm you have the 22" blade ready.
- Hook the new blade onto the J-hook opening, then slide it upward until it clicks/locks.
- Gently tug on the blade to confirm it’s fully latched.
Step 3: Repeat for the passenger-side wiper blade
- Repeat Step 1 and Step 2 on the passenger side using work gloves.
- Use the microfiber towel as protection any time the arm is up without a blade attached.
Step 4: Lower the wiper arms carefully
- Remove the painter’s tape.
- Lower each wiper arm back onto the windshield slowly, keeping control so it doesn’t slap the glass.
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and test the wipers at low speed, then high speed.
- Spray washer fluid and confirm the blades wipe cleanly without streaks or skipping.
- If a blade chatters, clean the windshield and the rubber edge with a microfiber towel and washer fluid, then retest.
