š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and turn the ignition off.
- Open the driver door window (optional) so you can reach controls easily if needed.
- Place a microfiber towel on the lower edge of the windshield as a cushion.
- Assumption: your 550i uses BMW wiper service position.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Put the wipers in āservice positionā
- Turn the ignition on, then turn it off (so the car is āawake,ā then shut down).
- Within a few seconds, press and hold the wiper stalk down (the single-wipe position) for about 3-5 seconds.
- The wipers should move up and stop partway on the windshield. This is service position (a mode that parks the wipers where you can lift them).
Step 2: Lift the wiper arm carefully
- Use your hand to gently lift one wiper arm away from the glass.
- Keep the microfiber towel on the glass below the arm.
Step 3: Remove the old wiper blade
- At the point where the blade connects to the arm, locate the small release tab/clip.
- Press the tab with your fingers; if itās tight, use a small flat trim tool to gently help press the tab. (A trim tool is a small plastic prying tool that helps you avoid scratching parts.)
- Slide the blade downward (toward the base of the wiper arm) until it unhooks, then remove it.
Step 4: Install the new wiper blade
- Match the new blade to the old one (length and connector style should match).
- Slide the new blade onto the arm until you hear/feel a solid āclick.ā
- Gently tug on the blade to confirm itās locked in place.
Step 5: Repeat for the other side
- Use the same steps on the second wiper.
- Replace both blades together for even wiping.
Step 6: Return wipers to normal parked position
- Lower both wiper arms back onto the windshield gently.
- Turn the ignition on and briefly tap the wiper stalk once to let the system re-park the wipers normally.
ā After Repair
- Test washer + wipers and confirm both blades wipe smoothly without streaks or skipping.
- Listen for any clicking (can mean the blade isnāt fully clipped in).
- Clean the windshield with glass cleaner for best results.
