🔧 Equinox - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

Replacing the front wiper blades is a quick job that restores clear visibility in rain and helps prevent scratching your windshield. You’ll remove the old blades from the wiper arms and click the new ones into place.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Don’t let the wiper arm snap down onto the glass—place a towel on the windshield under the arm.
  • ⚠️ Work on level ground with the ignition off and wipers switched off.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of spring-loaded joints when releasing the blade.
  • Battery disconnect is not required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic’s gloves
  • Clean towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Wiper blade adapter set - If included/required by blade brand - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, turn the ignition off, and make sure the wipers are in their “parked” position.
  • Lay a clean towel on the windshield where each arm could touch.
  • Unbox the new blades and identify the included adapters (if any).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift the driver-side wiper arm

  • Lift the wiper arm up and away from the windshield until it stays up.
  • Keep the clean towel in place on the glass as protection.

Step 2: Identify the blade attachment style

  • Look where the blade connects to the arm.
  • Most blades use a J-hook (a “J”-shaped hook at the end of the arm). Some use a pinch-tab (two squeeze tabs).
  • If you’re unsure, follow both options below.

Step 3A: Remove the old blade (J-hook style)

  • Rotate the blade so it’s roughly perpendicular to the wiper arm.
  • Find the small release tab on the connector and press it with your fingers (use mechanic’s gloves for grip).
  • While holding the tab, slide the blade down toward the base of the “J” and then unhook it.

Step 3B: Remove the old blade (pinch-tab style)

  • Squeeze the two tabs on the sides of the connector with your fingers (use mechanic’s gloves).
  • While squeezing, pull the blade straight off the end of the arm.

Step 4: Install the new blade

  • Match the new blade connector/adapter to the arm style. (An adapter is a small plastic piece that lets the blade fit different arm types.)
  • J-hook: Hook the new blade onto the arm and slide it upward until you hear/feel a solid “click.”
  • Pinch-tab: Push the new blade onto the arm until it clicks and the tabs lock.
  • Gently tug the blade to confirm it’s locked on.

Step 5: Lower the wiper arm carefully

  • Lower the arm back onto the windshield slowly so it doesn’t slap the glass.
  • Remove the clean towel.

Step 6: Repeat for the passenger-side blade

  • Repeat Steps 1–5 on the passenger side.
  • Replace both blades together for even wiping.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition on and test the wipers at low speed.
  • Use the washer spray and confirm both blades wipe smoothly with no streaking or chatter.
  • If a blade streaks, clean the windshield and blade rubber with glass cleaner and a clean towel, then retest.
