šŸ”§ Civic - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

Replacing your front wiper blades restores clear visibility in rain and prevents streaking and chatter. On your Civic, the front wiper arms use a common J-hook style connector, so this is a quick swap with no disassembly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF so the wipers can’t move unexpectedly.
  • āš ļø Don’t let a bare wiper arm snap onto the windshield; it can crack the glass.
  • āš ļø If you lift an arm up, keep one hand on it at all times.
  • āš ļø No battery disconnect is required.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Microfiber towel

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades - Driver: 26", Passenger: 18" - Qty: 2

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
  • Lift one wiper arm at a time so you don’t mix up the blade sizes.
  • Place a microfiber towel on the lower edge of the windshield as a cushion while you work.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift the wiper arm safely

  • Wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Gently lift the wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays up.
  • Slide a microfiber towel under the arm area on the glass. It helps prevent accidental chips.

Step 2: Release the old blade from the J-hook

  • Rotate the wiper blade so it’s roughly perpendicular (90°) to the wiper arm.
  • Find the small release tab/clip where the blade meets the arm.
  • Press the tab with your thumb. If it’s stuck, gently help it with a small flathead screwdriver (don’t pry hard).
  • Slide the blade down and out of the J-hook to remove it.
  • Keep one hand on the arm so it doesn’t snap back to the glass.

Step 3: Install the new blade

  • Confirm you have the correct size for the side you’re working on (driver is usually longer than passenger).
  • Slide the new blade’s connector onto the J-hook until it seats fully.
  • Pull lightly on the blade to confirm it’s locked in place. If it slides off, it isn’t latched.

Step 4: Lower the arm and repeat on the other side

  • Lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield gently.
  • Repeat Steps 1–3 for the other front wiper blade.
  • Remove the microfiber towel when finished.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the car and test the wipers with washer fluid.
  • If you see streaks, clean the windshield with glass cleaner and a clean microfiber towel (new blades can skip on dirty glass).
  • Make sure both blades sit flat and don’t ā€œflipā€ or chatter at the ends of the stroke.
