🔧 Grand Cherokee - Front Wiper Blade Replacement
Replacing the front wiper blades restores clear visibility in rain and prevents streaking and glass scratches. On your Grand Cherokee, the front blades attach to the wiper arms with a common “J-hook” style connector, so it’s a quick swap.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before working near the wipers.
- ⚠️ Do not let a bare wiper arm snap onto the windshield; it can crack the glass.
- ⚠️ Work on a stable surface; use a step stool if you can’t comfortably reach.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
- Place a microfiber towel on the lower edge of the windshield as a cushion, just in case the arm slips.
- Lift one wiper arm at a time so you don’t mix up blade orientation.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and protect the wiper arm
- Put on mechanic gloves and safety glasses.
- Lift the wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays up on its own.
- Keep the microfiber towel on the glass under the arm. Prevents accidental glass damage.
Step 2: Remove the old wiper blade from the J-hook
- At the middle of the blade where it meets the arm, find the small release tab (part of the connector).
- Press the release tab with your gloved thumb, then slide the blade down the hook (toward the bottom of the arm) to unhook it.
- Rotate the blade as needed and pull it off the arm.
- J-hook means the end of the wiper arm is shaped like the letter “J” and the blade hooks onto it.
Step 3: Install the new blade
- Confirm the new blade is 21" and has the correct J-hook adapter installed (most come pre-installed).
- Slide the new blade’s connector onto the wiper arm hook from the open end.
- Pull it upward until you hear/feel a click and it won’t slide back off.
- Gently tug on the blade to confirm it’s locked in place.
Step 4: Lower the arm carefully
- Hold the arm firmly and lower it back onto the windshield slowly.
- Remove the microfiber towel.
Step 5: Repeat for the other side
- Repeat Steps 1–4 for the remaining front wiper blade.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and test the front wipers on low and high speed.
- Test the windshield washer spray and confirm there’s no skipping or chattering.
- If the wipers smear, clean the glass with washer fluid and wipe the rubber edge once with a damp paper towel.
