šŸ”§ Escape - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

Replacing the front wiper blades restores clear visibility in rain and helps prevent streaking and chatter. On your Escape, this is a quick job using the common ā€œJ-hookā€ style wiper arm connection.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.4 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Don’t let the wiper arm snap onto the glass—metal arm can crack the windshield.
  • āš ļø Work with the ignition OFF and wipers switched OFF.
  • āš ļø Set a towel on the windshield under the arm as a cushion.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Microfiber towel

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades - Driver: 20", Passenger: 20" - Qty: 2

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and make sure the wiper switch is OFF.
  • Place a microfiber towel on the lower windshield where the wiper arm could fall.
  • Unbox the new blades and confirm they include a J-hook adapter (the hook-shaped wiper arm connection).

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift the wiper arms

  • Put on mechanic gloves and safety glasses.
  • Lift one wiper arm up and away from the windshield until it stays up on its own.
  • Keep the microfiber towel on the glass underneath. It prevents accidental glass damage.

Step 2: Remove the old wiper blade (J-hook)

  • Hold the wiper arm with one hand so it can’t spring back.
  • With your other hand, rotate the blade so it’s roughly perpendicular to the arm.
  • Find the small release tab/clip where the blade meets the hook, then press it with your thumb and slide the blade down and off the hook.
  • If it’s stuck, wiggle the blade while keeping the tab pressed.

Step 3: Install the new wiper blade

  • Confirm the new blade has the correct J-hook adapter installed (most come pre-installed).
  • Slide the new blade’s connector onto the hook until it clicks/locks.
  • Gently tug on the blade to confirm it’s fully latched.

Step 4: Lower the wiper arm carefully

  • Guide the arm back down to the windshield by hand—don’t drop it.
  • Remove the microfiber towel once the arm is resting normally.

Step 5: Repeat for the other side

  • Repeat Steps 1–4 on the other front wiper.
  • Make sure both blades are seated and aligned straight.

āœ… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition ON and run the front wipers on LOW, then HIGH.
  • Spray washer fluid and confirm both blades wipe cleanly without skipping or hitting the cowl.
  • If there’s streaking, clean the windshield with glass cleaner and a fresh microfiber towel.
