šŸ”§ RAV4 - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

You’ll remove the old wiper blade assemblies from the wiper arms and slide new blades on until they lock. Fresh blades restore clear vision in rain and prevent streaking and windshield scratches.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working near the wipers.
  • āš ļø Don’t let a bare wiper arm snap onto the glass—place a towel on the windshield as a cushion.
  • āš ļø Work on a cool windshield (hot glass can crack if bumped).
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Shop towel
  • Small flathead screwdriver

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades - Driver: 24", Passenger: 17" - Qty: 2

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • šŸ…æļø Park on level ground and make sure the wipers are in their ā€œparkedā€ (down) position.
  • Lay a shop towel on the lower windshield area in case an arm drops.
  • Open the new blades and identify the correct length for driver vs passenger side.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift the wiper arm

  • Lift one wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays up on its own.
  • Keep the shop towel on the glass as protection.

Step 2: Release the blade from the hook

  • Hold the blade with one hand near the connector (the plastic joint area).
  • Press the small release tab on the blade connector. If it’s stubborn, gently help it with a small flathead screwdriver.
  • Release tab = small plastic latch.

Step 3: Slide the old blade off

  • With the tab held in, slide the blade down and away from the ā€œJ-hookā€ end of the wiper arm until it comes free.
  • Carefully set the old blade aside.

Step 4: Install the new blade

  • Align the new blade’s connector with the wiper arm’s J-hook.
  • Slide the blade onto the hook until you hear/feel a click.
  • Gently tug on the blade to confirm it’s locked in place.

Step 5: Lower the arm and repeat on the other side

  • Lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield slowly (don’t drop it).
  • Repeat Steps 1–4 for the other front wiper blade.

āœ… After Repair

  • 🧼 Remove the shop towel from the windshield.
  • Turn ignition ON and briefly test the front wipers and washer spray.
  • If you see streaking, clean the windshield edge-to-edge and re-check that each blade is fully clicked onto the hook.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$90 (parts + labor)

You Save: $20-$40 by doing it yourself!
