🔧 Tacoma - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

Replacing the front wiper blades on your Tacoma is a quick job that restores clear visibility in rain and prevents the metal wiper arm from scratching the windshield. You’ll lift each wiper arm, remove the old blade from the J-hook, and snap the new one in place.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Don’t let the bare wiper arm snap onto the glass—put a towel on the windshield as a cushion.
  • ⚠️ Work with the ignition OFF and wipers OFF so the arms don’t move unexpectedly.
  • ⚠️ Use care in cold weather; blades and plastic clips can crack when brittle.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean microfiber towel
  • Step stool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades - Driver: match existing length, Passenger: match existing length - Qty: 2
  • Windshield washer fluid - Qty: 1 gallon

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
  • Place a clean microfiber towel on the windshield under the wiper area (insurance against the arm snapping down).
  • Confirm your new blades match your current blades’ length and connector style (your Tacoma uses a common J-hook style—this is the curved “hook” at the end of the wiper arm).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift the wiper arm safely

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Lift the driver-side wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays up.
  • Keep the clean microfiber towel laid on the glass underneath. Prevents accidental glass damage.

Step 2: Remove the old wiper blade

  • Rotate the wiper blade so it’s roughly perpendicular to the arm (this gives you room to access the clip).
  • Find the small locking tab where the blade attaches to the J-hook.
  • Press the locking tab with your thumb and slide the blade down and off the hook.
  • If it’s stuck, wiggle it gently while holding the arm steady—don’t pry against the glass.

Step 3: Install the new wiper blade

  • Align the new blade’s connector with the J-hook.
  • Slide the new blade onto the hook until it clicks/locks.
  • Gently tug on the blade to confirm it’s fully latched. If it pulls off, it’s not locked.

Step 4: Lower the arm and repeat on the other side

  • Carefully lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield (don’t let it drop).
  • Repeat Steps 1–3 for the passenger-side wiper blade.
  • Remove the clean microfiber towel from the windshield when done.

Step 5: Quick function check

  • Top off windshield washer fluid if needed.
  • Start the truck and test washers/wipers for 2–3 wipes.
  • Confirm there’s no streaking and both blades park correctly at the bottom of the windshield.

âś… After Repair

  • Recheck that both blades are clipped in by gently lifting each blade at the connector.
  • If you get chatter/streaks, clean the windshield with glass cleaner and wipe the rubber edge with a damp towel.
