🔧 Tacoma - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

You’ll remove the old wiper blades from the front wiper arms and snap new blades onto the same attachment. Worn blades streak, chatter, or leave unwiped spots, which hurts visibility—especially at night or in rain.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Turn the ignition OFF and keep hands clear of the wiper linkage.
  • 🛑 Do not let the wiper arm snap onto the windshield (it can crack the glass).
  • 🛑 Support the wiper arm with a towel on the glass while swapping blades.
  • 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Work gloves
  • Clean shop towel
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Tape (painter’s tape)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades - Verify lengths on your current blades before ordering - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 🔍 Check the length printed on each current blade (driver and passenger can be different).
  • 🧼 Wipe the windshield edge near the wipers so grit doesn’t scratch the glass.
  • 🧷 Place a towel where the wiper arm could contact the windshield.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the wiper arms

  • Lift one wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays up.
  • Place a clean shop towel on the windshield under the arm.
  • Use painter’s tape to mark the blade’s parked position on the glass. Helps you notice arm misalignment.

Step 2: Identify your blade attachment type

  • Look where the blade meets the end of the wiper arm.
  • If the arm end looks like a curved “J”, follow the J-hook steps below.
  • If you see a small tab/button that you squeeze or press, follow the Pinch-tab steps below.

Step 3A: Remove the old blade (J-hook type)

  • Rotate the blade so it’s roughly perpendicular to the arm.
  • Find the small plastic release tab at the blade adapter.
  • Press the tab by hand; if tight, gently help it with a small flathead screwdriver.
  • Slide the blade down toward the base of the “J” and unhook it from the arm.

Step 3B: Remove the old blade (Pinch-tab type)

  • Squeeze the two sides of the tab (or press the center tab, depending on the adapter).
  • While holding the tab, slide the blade straight off the end of the arm.
  • If stuck, use a small flathead screwdriver gently to help the tab release. Don’t pry hard—plastic breaks.

Step 4: Install the new blade

  • Match the new blade to the side you removed (lengths can differ).
  • Slide the new blade adapter onto the arm in the same direction the old one came off.
  • Push until you hear/feel a solid click (the lock engaged).
  • Gently tug the blade with your hand to confirm it’s fully locked.

Step 5: Lower the wiper arm carefully

  • Hold the arm firmly and lower it onto the windshield slowly.
  • Repeat Steps 1–5 for the other side.

âś… After Repair

  • 🧪 Turn ignition ON and run the wipers with washer fluid for 5–10 swipes.
  • 🔎 Verify there’s no streaking and both blades park in the same taped positions.
  • 🧼 Clean the windshield with glass cleaner if the new blades chatter (road film can cause noise).

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$90 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $20-$60 (parts only)

You Save: $20-$30 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.4 hours.
