🔧 Suburban - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

Replacing the front wiper blades restores clear visibility in rain and reduces windshield streaking. On your Suburban, the blades clip onto the wiper arm with a common “J-hook” style connection, so it’s a quick DIY job.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Turn the ignition off and remove the key before lifting wiper arms.
  • 🛑 Hold the wiper arm firmly—if it snaps back, it can crack the windshield.
  • 🛑 Put a towel on the windshield under the arm as a cushion.
  • 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Clean microfiber towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades - Driver: 22", Passenger: 22" - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Suburban on level ground and turn the ignition off.
  • Place a clean microfiber towel on the lower edge of the windshield under each wiper arm.
  • If your wiper arms feel stuck to the glass, gently wiggle them free—don’t force them.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift the wiper arm

  • Use your hands (with nitrile gloves) to lift one wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays up.
  • Keep the clean microfiber towel on the glass below it. Prevents damage if it snaps down.

Step 2: Unclip the old wiper blade (J-hook)

  • Rotate the wiper blade so it’s roughly perpendicular (90°) to the wiper arm.
  • Find the small release tab on the blade’s connector (the plastic piece where it meets the arm).
  • Press the release tab with your thumb, then slide the blade down and off the hook.
  • It should slide—don’t pry on the windshield.

Step 3: Install the new wiper blade

  • Compare the new blade to the old one to confirm length: 22" on that side.
  • Slide the new blade’s connector onto the wiper arm hook (from the open end of the “J” hook).
  • Pull it upward until you hear/feel a solid “click.”
  • Gently tug the blade to confirm it’s locked in place.

Step 4: Lower the wiper arm carefully

  • Use your hand to guide the arm back down onto the windshield—do not let it drop.
  • Remove the clean microfiber towel.

Step 5: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 1–4 for the second front wiper blade (also 22").

âś… After Repair

  • Start your Suburban and run the front washers for 1–2 seconds, then run wipers on low.
  • Check for any skipping, chatter, or a blade that looks crooked (that usually means it didn’t “click” fully onto the hook).
  • If there are streaks, clean the windshield with glass cleaner and a microfiber towel.
