🔧 Sierra 1500 - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement
Replacing the front wiper blades is a quick maintenance job that restores clear visibility in rain and helps prevent windshield streaking. You’ll remove the old blades from the wiper arms and snap new blades onto the same attachment.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and make sure the wipers are OFF before lifting the arms.
- ⚠️ Don’t let a bare wiper arm snap onto the windshield—place a towel under the arm to protect the glass.
- ⚠️ Work carefully in windy conditions; the arms can spring back suddenly.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Microfiber towel
- Small flathead screwdriver
- Tape measure
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and switch the ignition OFF.
- Lift each wiper arm up away from the windshield until it holds itself up.
- Place a microfiber towel on the lower windshield area under the wiper arm. Prevents accidental glass damage.
- Use a tape measure (or read the size printed on the old blade) so you buy the correct lengths.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Measure and confirm the blade lengths
- Use a tape measure to measure each blade from end to end.
- If the size is printed on the blade (often near the center), read it and note it.
- Buy two new blades that match those lengths. Replace both even if one looks OK.
Step 2: Remove the old blade from the wiper arm
- With the arm lifted, hold the blade near the center with your hand (wear nitrile gloves if desired).
- Find the small locking tab where the blade clips to the arm (this is the latch that prevents it from sliding off).
- If the tab is stiff, gently help it with a small flathead screwdriver while supporting the blade with your other hand.
- Slide the blade down and out of the hook/connector until it releases.
Step 3: Install the new blade
- Unbox the new blade and confirm it has the correct connector/adapter for your arm.
- Line up the new blade connector with the wiper arm hook/attachment.
- Push/slide the blade into place until you hear or feel a solid “click” (that’s the lock tab engaging).
- Gently tug on the blade to confirm it’s locked in. If it pulls off, it isn’t latched.
Step 4: Lower the wiper arms carefully
- Remove the microfiber towel.
- Lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield slowly (don’t drop it).
- Repeat Steps 2–4 for the other side.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the ignition ON and run the washers/wipers to test.
- If you see streaking, clean the glass with washer fluid and wipe the rubber edge with a damp microfiber towel.
- If a blade chatters or doesn’t sit flat, re-check that the correct adapter is installed and fully clicked in.
