How to Replace Front Window Regulators on a 2016 Dodge Durango (Both Front Doors)
Step-by-step door panel removal, glass support, wiring, parts/tools list, and torque specs

š§ Durango - Front Window Regulator Replacement
The front window regulator is the lift mechanism that moves the door glass up and down. Replacement usually means removing the door trim panel, securing the glass, unbolting the regulator/motor assembly, and installing the new unit.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours (per door)
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Disconnect the negative battery cable to avoid shorts and accidental airbag/wiring issues.
- ā ļø Support the window glass before unbolting itāglass can drop suddenly and shatter.
- ā ļø Keep fingers clear of the regulator arms/cables; they can pinch hard.
- ā ļø Donāt tear the vapor barrier (plastic sheet). It prevents water leaks into the cabin.

š© Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front window regulator assembly - Qty: 1
- Front window regulator motor - Qty: 1 (only if regulator doesnāt include motor)
- Door trim panel retainer clips - Qty: 1 set (recommended)
- Butyl seal tape (vapor barrier adhesive) - Qty: 1
š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and turn the ignition off.
- Lower the window to about halfway if it still moves (this helps access the glass-to-regulator fasteners).
- Disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative terminal and isolate it so it canāt spring back.
- Tip: Take photos of connectors and routing.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the door trim panel
- Use a trim removal tool set (plastic) to carefully pry up the window/lock switch panel.
- Unplug the switch connectors by pressing the locking tabs (use a pick tool if needed).
- Remove visible screws in the armrest/handle area using a Phillips screwdriver and/or Torx T20 screwdriver.
- At the bottom/edges of the panel, use a trim removal tool set (plastic) to pop the retaining clips free.
- Lift the door panel upward to unhook it from the top ledge near the window.
- Disconnect any remaining connectors and the door handle cable (use a flat-blade screwdriver gently to release the cable clip).
Step 2: Remove the vapor barrier (water shield)
- Use a razor blade or plastic scraper to separate the butyl adhesive without tearing the plastic sheet.
- Peel it back just enough to access the regulator area and the glass clamps.
Step 3: Secure the window glass
- If the glass is still attached, hold it in the full-up position.
- Use painterās tape (1.5-inch wide) to tape the glass to the door frame (run multiple strips over the top of the door).
- If the glass has dropped, carefully lift it by hand and tape it up the same way.
Step 4: Disconnect the glass from the regulator
- Locate the glass-to-regulator clamp bolts through the access holes in the inner door.
- Use an 10mm socket with a ratchet and 6-inch ratchet extension to loosen/remove the clamp bolts.
- Carefully separate the glass from the regulator and make sure the glass stays taped securely.
- Torque spec (reassembly): Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs)
Step 5: Unplug the window motor and free the harness
- Unplug the motor connector by pressing the tab (use a pick tool if the tab is stubborn).
- Release any wiring clips from the door using needle-nose pliers or a trim removal tool set (plastic).
Step 6: Remove the regulator assembly
- Remove the regulator mounting bolts using an 10mm socket and ratchet.
- If the motor is separate from the regulator, remove motor fasteners using a Torx T30 screwdriver (or 10mm socket, depending on replacement design).
- Work the regulator out through the largest access opening in the door.
- Torque spec (reassembly): Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs)
- Tip: Rotate it slowly to avoid scratching paint.
Step 7: Install the new regulator (and motor, if needed)
- Slide the new regulator into the door through the access opening.
- Hand-thread all mounting bolts first to prevent cross-threading, then tighten with a 10mm socket and ratchet.
- If youāre transferring the motor, install it onto the regulator and tighten using a Torx T30 screwdriver.
- Torque spec: Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs)
- Assumption: Typical Durango door regulator fasteners are small 8ā10mm hardware; torque values above are common for this application.
Step 8: Reattach the glass to the regulator
- Lower/raise the regulator carrier to line up with the glass clamps (reconnect motor temporarily if needed).
- Set the glass into the clamps and install/tighten clamp bolts using a 10mm socket.
- Torque spec: Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs)
- Remove the painterās tape (1.5-inch wide) after the glass is clamped securely.
Step 9: Test operation before reassembly
- Reconnect the window switch temporarily and reconnect the battery negative using a 10mm socket.
- Cycle the window up/down using the switch and listen for binding, clicking, or crooked travel.
- If the glass tilts, loosen the clamp bolts slightly with a 10mm socket, align the glass, then re-torque.
- Disconnect the battery negative again with a 10mm socket before final reassembly.
Step 10: Reinstall the vapor barrier and door panel
- Press the vapor barrier back into place; add butyl seal tape (vapor barrier adhesive) where needed for a full seal.
- Reconnect all electrical connectors and the handle cable.
- Hang the door panel on the top ledge and press it down into position.
- Press the panel clips in around the edges using your hands (steady pressure).
- Reinstall screws using a Phillips screwdriver and/or Torx T20 screwdriver.
- Snap the switch panel back in place.
ā After Repair
- Reconnect the battery negative using a 10mm socket.
- Test the window from both the driver switch and the door switch.
- If auto up/down isnāt working, reset it: turn ignition on, fully lower the window and hold the switch down 2 seconds, then fully raise it and hold 2 seconds.
- Check for water leaks later: after the next rain or car wash, confirm the carpet near that door stays dry.
