📋 Before You Begin

• Park on level ground, key off, and remove the key.
• Lower the window to about halfway (so you can reach the glass-to-regulator fasteners through the door access holes).
• Disconnect the battery using a 10mm socket (negative terminal first) and set the cable aside.
• Place a strip of painters tape (1.5") on the outer door skin near the top edge to help hold the glass later.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the interior door panel

• Use a trim removal tool set to gently pry up the window/lock switch panel (if equipped) and unplug the connector(s).
• Remove visible door-pull/handle screws using a Torx T20 screwdriver or Torx T30 screwdriver (Jeep commonly uses Torx here).
• Use panel clip pliers or a trim removal tool set to pop the door panel clips loose around the perimeter.
• Lift the door panel straight up to unhook it from the top rail, then disconnect any remaining electrical connectors.
• Tip: Work slowly—clips break easily.

Step 2: Remove the vapor barrier (plastic sheet)

• Use a pick tool to start an edge, then peel the vapor barrier back by hand.
• If the butyl (sticky rope adhesive) is stubborn, use a trim removal tool set to separate it without tearing the plastic.
• Stick the vapor barrier somewhere clean so dirt doesn’t ruin the seal.

Step 3: Support the window glass

• With the window about halfway down, look through the door access holes with a flashlight to locate the glass-to-regulator attachment points.
• Add multiple long strips of painters tape (1.5") from the outside of the glass over the door frame to hold the glass up once it’s detached.
• Tip: Use 3–5 strips for safety.

Step 4: Disconnect the glass from the regulator

• Remove the glass attachment fasteners using a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and 6" socket extension.
• Once fasteners are removed/loosened, slide the glass fully up by hand and re-secure it with more painters tape (1.5").
• If there are plastic retainers, use needle-nose pliers carefully—don’t crush the glass channel.

Step 5: Unplug the window motor and remove the regulator

• Unplug the window motor electrical connector (press the lock tab; use a pick tool gently if needed).
• Remove the regulator/motor mounting bolts using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" socket extension.
• Guide the regulator assembly out through the largest access opening in the door.
• Place bolts in a magnetic parts tray so nothing falls into the door.

Step 6: Install the new regulator assembly

• Feed the new regulator into the door the same way the old one came out.
• Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading, then snug them with a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
• Tighten the regulator mounting bolts with a torque wrench (in-lb): Torque to 80 in-lbs (9 Nm).
• Reconnect the motor connector until it clicks.

Step 7: Reattach the glass to the regulator

• Carefully lower the glass by hand until it lines up with the regulator clamps/holes.
• Install the glass attachment fasteners using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
• Tighten with a torque wrench (in-lb): Torque to 80 in-lbs (9 Nm).
• Remove the painters tape (1.5") from the outside of the door.

Step 8: Quick function test (before reassembly)

• Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
• Plug the switch panel back in (don’t reinstall the door panel yet).
• Cycle the window up/down while watching inside the door with a flashlight for cable snagging or binding.
• If it tilts, stop and re-check that the glass is seated correctly in its run channels.
• Disconnect the battery again using a 10mm socket before final reassembly.

Step 9: Reinstall the vapor barrier and door panel

• Re-stick the vapor barrier. If the seal is weak, apply vapor barrier butyl tape and press firmly by hand all the way around.
• Reconnect all door electrical connectors.
• Hang the door panel on the top rail and press it into place.
• Reinstall screws using a Torx T20 screwdriver or Torx T30 screwdriver.
• Press perimeter clips in by hand; if clips are damaged, replace them.

✅ After Repair

• Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
• Cycle the window fully down and fully up 3 times to confirm smooth travel and proper sealing at the top.
• Listen for clicking/popping (sign of a twisted cable or misrouted regulator).
• Check the door for water leaks after the next rain/wash—poor vapor-barrier sealing can cause wet carpets.
