🔧 Fusion - Front Window Regulator Replacement

The front window regulator is the cable-and-track assembly that moves the glass up and down. Replacing it usually means removing the door panel, supporting the glass, swapping the regulator (and sometimes the motor), then reinitializing the auto-up/down function.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours (per door)

Assumption: Torque specs below are typical for Fusion door hardware; verify if you have OEM data.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the 12V battery before door work to reduce airbag/short risk.
  • ⚠️ Wait at least 5 minutes after 12V disconnect before unplugging door connectors.
  • ⚠️ Support the window glass with tape before loosening clamps, or it can drop and shatter.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the regulator tracks and cable path.
  • ⚠️ Don’t pull on the yellow connectors (SRS/airbag-related); handle gently.

  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 3/8" ratchet

  • Marker pen
  • Magnetic parts tray
  • Work light

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front door window regulator assembly - Qty: 1
  • Front door window motor - Qty: 1 (only if not included or if your motor is bad)
  • Door panel retainer clips - Qty: 1 set
  • Water shield butyl tape - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, ignition OFF, key away from the car.
  • Lower the window to about halfway if it still moves (this lines up the clamp bolts).
  • Disconnect the 12V battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket, then wait 5 minutes.
  • Set up a clean area for screws/clips (use a magnetic parts tray).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the front door trim panel

  • Use a trim removal tool set to gently pry off the small trim covers at the door pull/handle area (covers hide screws).
  • Remove the exposed screws using a 7mm socket and/or Torx T20 screwdriver (varies by door/option).
  • At the bottom/side edges, use a trim removal tool set to pop the panel clips loose.
  • Lift the panel straight up to unhook it from the window ledge.
  • Disconnect electrical connectors (window switch, speaker) using a pick tool to release locking tabs.

Step 2: Remove the water shield (vapor barrier)

  • Peel back the foam/plastic water shield carefully using a trim removal tool set.
  • Try to keep the black sticky butyl intact; if it’s messy or won’t reseal, plan to use water shield butyl tape later.

Step 3: Support the window glass

  • Run painters tape from the outside of the glass over the door frame to the inside (2-4 strips).
  • Press the tape firmly so it actually holds the glass up.
  • Tip: Add extra tape if glass feels loose.

Step 4: Access and loosen the glass-to-regulator clamps

  • Use a work light to find the access holes in the inner door metal.
  • If needed, temporarily reconnect the window switch and 12V battery to move the regulator until the clamp bolts line up with the access holes, then disconnect the 12V battery again using a 10mm socket.
  • Use a 10mm socket with a 6" extension to loosen (do not fully remove) the two glass clamp bolts.
  • Torque on install: Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lb)

Step 5: Separate the glass from the regulator

  • With the clamp bolts loosened, lift the glass slightly by hand and make sure it’s fully supported by painters tape.
  • Mark the glass position with a marker pen (helps alignment on reassembly).

Step 6: Remove the regulator and motor

  • Unplug the window motor connector using a pick tool.
  • Remove the regulator mounting bolts using a 10mm socket.
  • If the motor is separate from the regulator, remove the motor screws using a Torx T25 screwdriver (some units use Torx T30 screwdriver).
  • Carefully maneuver the regulator assembly out through the largest access opening in the door.
  • Torque on install (regulator bolts): Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lb)

Step 7: Install the new regulator (and motor if needed)

  • Slide the new regulator into the door in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Start all mounting bolts by hand, then tighten with a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lb) using a torque wrench (20-200 in-lb).
  • If installing a motor, attach it using a Torx T25 screwdriver (or Torx T30 screwdriver as equipped).
  • Reconnect the motor electrical connector.

Step 8: Reattach the glass to the regulator

  • Lower the glass carefully into the clamps (use the alignment mark you made).
  • Snug the clamp bolts with a 10mm socket, then final-tighten.
  • Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lb) using a torque wrench (20-200 in-lb).

Step 9: Reinstall the water shield and door panel

  • Press the water shield back into place; add water shield butyl tape anywhere it won’t seal.
  • Reconnect all door electrical connectors.
  • Hang the door panel on the top lip first, then press clips in around the edges.
  • Reinstall screws using a 7mm socket and/or Torx T20 screwdriver.

Step 10: Reconnect 12V power

  • Reconnect the 12V battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn ignition ON and test window up/down from the driver switch and the repaired door switch.
  • Initialize one-touch (auto) function:
    • Fully close the window and hold the switch UP for 2-3 seconds.
    • Fully open the window and hold the switch DOWN for 2-3 seconds.
    • Repeat once if auto-up/down still doesn’t work.
  • Listen for binding/clicking; if present, recheck glass alignment and clamp tightness.
  • Confirm the water shield is sealed to help prevent future speaker/module damage.
