🔧 Grand Cherokee - Front Wheel Bearing Replacement

The front wheel bearing on your Grand Cherokee is serviced as a complete hub and bearing assembly. You will remove the front wheel, brake caliper, rotor, axle nut area hardware as applicable, then unbolt the hub assembly from the steering knuckle and install the new one.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours per side

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on level ground only, and support your Grand Cherokee with jack stands before going underneath or pulling hard on parts.
  • ⚠️ Never let the brake caliper hang by the brake hose. Hang it with wire or a caliper hanger.
  • ⚠️ The front hub bolts and axle nut can be very tight. Use steady force and keep the socket fully seated.
  • ⚠️ If equipped with front wheel speed sensor wiring at the hub, disconnect it carefully so the ABS wiring is not stretched or twisted.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not normally required for this repair.

  • Front wheel hub and bearing assembly - Qty: 1 per side
  • Front axle nut - Qty: 1 per side
  • Brake cleaner spray - Qty: 1
  • Anti-seize compound - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your Grand Cherokee on flat, solid ground.
  • 🅿️ Shift to Park and apply the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🔩 Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
  • 📌 A hub puller is a tool that pushes or pulls a stuck wheel hub out of the steering knuckle without damaging nearby parts.
  • 📌 A torque wrench is a tool that tightens bolts to an exact tightness so parts do not come loose or get damaged.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Lug Nuts

  • Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about 1/2 turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Loosen before lifting the tire.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Front

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front of your Grand Cherokee at the correct front lift point.
  • Place jack stands under the proper front support points.
  • Slowly lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
  • Gently shake the vehicle by hand to make sure it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheel

  • Use the 22mm socket to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove the front wheel and place it flat under the frame area as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Remove the Brake Caliper

  • Use a 13mm socket or 15mm socket, depending on the caliper bolt head fitted, to remove the brake caliper slide bolts.
  • Lift the caliper off the rotor.
  • Use a caliper hanger hook to hang the caliper from the suspension spring or upper control arm.
  • Do not pull, twist, or stretch the rubber brake hose.

Step 5: Remove the Caliper Bracket

  • Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to remove the two caliper bracket bolts.
  • Remove the caliper bracket and set it aside.
  • When reinstalling later, tighten the caliper bracket bolts to Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs).

Step 6: Remove the Brake Rotor

  • Pull the brake rotor straight off by hand.
  • If it is stuck from rust, tap around the rotor hat with a rubber mallet.
  • Do not hit the wheel studs directly.
  • Rust can hold the rotor tightly.

Step 7: Disconnect the Wheel Speed Sensor Wiring

  • Look behind the hub for the ABS wheel speed sensor wire, if your replacement hub includes a sensor lead.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently release the plastic wiring retainers.
  • Use a 10mm socket if a small bracket bolt holds the wiring to the knuckle.
  • Unplug the connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling the connector apart.
  • Do not yank on the wires.

Step 8: Remove the Axle Nut

  • Use a 36mm axle nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to remove the front axle nut.
  • If the axle nut has a locking stake or retainer, use needle-nose pliers or a flat-blade screwdriver to remove or release it first.
  • Discard the old axle nut if a new nut is supplied.

Step 9: Free the Axle from the Hub

  • Push the axle shaft inward through the hub splines by hand.
  • If it is stuck, thread the old axle nut on a few turns and tap the nut with a hammer.
  • Do not mushroom or damage the axle threads.
  • Thread the nut on to protect threads.

Step 10: Remove the Hub Mounting Bolts

  • From behind the steering knuckle, use an 18mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to remove the three hub and bearing assembly bolts.
  • Turn the steering wheel slightly if you need more room to reach each bolt.
  • Keep the socket straight on the bolt head so it does not round off.

Step 11: Remove the Old Hub Assembly

  • Pull the hub assembly straight out of the steering knuckle by hand.
  • If it is stuck, install a hub puller kit (specialty) and remove the hub from the knuckle.
  • You may also tap the hub flange evenly with a hammer, working side to side.
  • Do not strike the steering knuckle hard enough to crack or deform it.

Step 12: Clean the Mounting Surface

  • Use a wire brush to clean rust from the steering knuckle bore and hub mounting face.
  • Spray the area with brake cleaner spray and wipe it clean.
  • Apply a very thin film of anti-seize compound to the knuckle bore only.
  • Do not get anti-seize on the brake rotor or wheel studs.

Step 13: Install the New Hub Assembly

  • Slide the new front wheel hub and bearing assembly onto the axle splines and into the steering knuckle.
  • Align the bolt holes by hand.
  • Start all three hub bolts by hand first to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use an 18mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the hub bolts evenly.
  • Tighten the hub bolts to Torque to 149 Nm (110 ft-lbs).

Step 14: Install the New Axle Nut

  • Install the new front axle nut by hand first.
  • Use the 36mm axle nut socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the axle nut.
  • Tighten the axle nut to Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs), then rotate an additional 90 degrees if using a torque-to-yield replacement nut supplied for this hub style.
  • If your replacement nut uses a cotter pin or retainer, install it with needle-nose pliers.

Step 15: Reconnect the Wheel Speed Sensor Wiring

  • Route the ABS wiring the same way it was before removal.
  • Push the connector together until it clicks.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to seat the plastic retainers gently.
  • Use a 10mm socket to reinstall any small wiring bracket bolts.
  • Make sure the wire cannot rub the tire, rotor, or axle.

Step 16: Reinstall the Brake Rotor

  • Slide the rotor back over the wheel studs by hand.
  • If needed, use one lug nut by hand to hold the rotor flat while installing the brakes.

Step 17: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket

  • Position the caliper bracket over the rotor.
  • Start both bracket bolts by hand.
  • Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the bracket bolts.
  • Tighten the caliper bracket bolts to Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs).

Step 18: Reinstall the Brake Caliper

  • Place the brake caliper back over the pads and rotor.
  • Use a 13mm socket or 15mm socket to reinstall the caliper slide bolts.
  • Tighten the caliper slide bolts to Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).

Step 19: Reinstall the Wheel

  • Install the wheel onto the studs.
  • Thread all lug nuts by hand first.
  • Use a 22mm socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 20: Lower and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack to raise your Grand Cherokee slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands.
  • Lower the tire to the ground.
  • Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Tighten the lug nuts to Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Pump the brake pedal a few times before driving so the caliper seats normally.
  • ✅ Start your Grand Cherokee and check that the ABS warning light goes out after a short drive.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly at first. Listen for grinding, clicking, humming, or rubbing.
  • ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after 25-50 miles.
  • ✅ If the ABS, traction control, or stability control light stays on, scan for wheel speed sensor codes.
