🔧 Tacoma - Control Arm Replacement

On your Tacoma, “control arms” can mean the front upper control arm or the front lower control arm. The steps, parts, and especially the torque specs are different, so I need 2 quick details before I tell you to loosen anything.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support the truck with jack stands on the frame; never rely on a jack.
  • ⚠️ Suspension parts can “spring” when bolts come out; keep hands clear of pinch points.
  • ⚠️ Do not let the steering knuckle hang by the brake hose or ABS wire.
  • ⚠️ Final tightening of control arm pivot bolts must be done at normal ride height (prevents bushing twist).

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Breaker bar (1/2")
  • Torque wrench (30–250 ft-lbs range)
  • Socket set (10mm–24mm, 1/2" drive)
  • Wrench set (10mm–24mm)
  • Pry bar (18")
  • Ball joint separator (specialty)
  • Hammer (2 lb)
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Paint marker
  • Penetrating oil

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front upper control arm assembly - Qty: 1 (or 2 if doing both sides)
  • Front lower control arm assembly - Qty: 1 (or 2 if doing both sides)
  • Control arm hardware kit (nuts/bolts/cotter pins as applicable) - Qty: 1
  • Alignment service (after repair) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

    "
  • 🧩 Tell me which you’re replacing: front upper or front lower control arm?
  • 🧩 Are you doing driver side, passenger side, or both sides?
  • Park on level ground, shift to P, and chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
  • Spray control arm bolts and ball joint fasteners with penetrating oil and wait 10–15 minutes.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Stop here—confirm which control arm

  • I can’t give correct Toyota-specific steps and torque specs until you confirm upper vs lower and which side(s).
  • Reply with: “upper” or “lower”, and “driver/passenger/both”.

✅ After Repair

  • Do not skip the alignment after any control arm work.
  • Re-check all visible fasteners after a short test drive.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $700-$1,800 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $200-$900 (parts only)
