1500 Classic - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement 💡
Good news: on your 1500 Classic, the front turn signal bulbs are built into the headlamp assembly, and the whole headlamp has to come out. It’s not hard, just a bit bulky.
Parts & Bulb Info 🔧
- 💡 Front turn signal bulb: PY27/7W (also called 3157A amber, dual-filament style). Replace both sides so brightness and color match.
- 💡 Optional: Dielectric grease (a non-conductive grease that protects electrical contacts from corrosion).
Tools You’ll Need 🧰
- 🔧 10 mm socket and ratchet (ratchet = small hand tool that turns sockets).
- 🔧 Short extension for the ratchet (helps reach bolts).
- 🔧 Flat trim tool or flat screwdriver (for plastic clips; a trim tool is a plastic pry tool that helps remove clips without damage).
- 🔧 Gloves (keeps oils off bulbs and protects your hands).
- 🔧 Safety glasses.
Safety First ⚠️
- ⚠️ Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and put the transmission in PARK.
- ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and lights OFF.
- ⚠️ Don’t pull on wires; always grab the plastic bulb socket or connector.
1500 Classic - Accessing the Headlamp Assembly 🔩
The headlamp is held by bolts and a hidden slide-lock behind the grille. You’ll remove the grille first, then the headlamp.
Step 1 – Open the hood
- 🔧 Pull the hood release inside the cab, then unlatch and raise the hood. Use the hood prop rod to secure it.
Step 2 – Remove the upper grille fasteners
- 🔧 Along the top of the grille (just behind the front edge), remove the plastic push clips and/or 10 mm bolts:
- Use the trim tool or flat screwdriver to gently pry up the center of each plastic clip, then pull the whole clip out.
- Remove any 10 mm bolts with your ratchet.
Step 3 – Release the grille
- 🔧 The grille also has lower clips that snap into the front fascia:
- Stand in front of the truck, grab the grille near each headlamp, and pull it straight forward with firm, steady pressure.
- You’ll feel the clips pop free. Don’t yank sideways to avoid breaking tabs.
- 🔧 Set the grille aside somewhere safe so it doesn’t get scratched.

Step 4 – Remove headlamp mounting bolts
- 🔧 Each headlamp has:
- Two visible 10 mm bolts on the front (top and side).
- 🔧 Remove both 10 mm bolts with your ratchet and extension. Keep them in a small container so they don’t get lost.
Step 5 – Release the rear slide-lock
Behind each headlamp is a plastic slide-lock that holds the lamp in place from the side.
- 🔧 Look behind the headlamp area from inside the engine bay, toward the fender side. You’ll see a black plastic tab/rod that slides up and down.
- 🔧 Pull the slide-lock straight up to unlock the headlamp. It may be a bit stiff; wiggle gently while pulling.
Step 6 – Remove the headlamp
- 🔧 From the front of the truck, grab the headlamp housing with both hands and pull it straight forward. It’s held by alignment pins, so it may feel tight at first.
- 🔧 Once it pops free, pull it forward enough to access the bulb sockets and wiring behind it. You don’t need to unplug every connector—just enough room to reach the turn signal socket.

Step 7 – Locate and remove the turn signal socket
- 🔧 On the back of the headlamp, find the lower outer socket (this is the front turn signal/parking lamp).
- 🔧 Grip the socket and turn it counterclockwise (left) about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out of the headlamp.
Step 8 – Remove the old bulb
- 🔧 The PY27/7W/3157A bulb is a wedge bulb (it just pushes in, no twist on the glass):
- Pull the bulb straight out of the socket. Wiggle gently if it’s stuck.
Step 9 – Install the new bulb
- 🔧 With clean gloves, push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- 🔧 If you have dielectric grease, put a very small dab on the socket contacts (not on the glass) to help prevent corrosion.
Step 10 – Reinstall the socket into the headlamp
- 🔧 Align the tabs on the socket with the slots in the headlamp opening.
- 🔧 Insert the socket and turn it clockwise (right) about 1/4 turn until it locks. Make sure it’s fully locked so no moisture gets in.

Step 11 – Refit the headlamp
- 🔧 If you unplugged any connectors, plug them back in until they click.
- 🔧 Line up the headlamp’s alignment pins with the holes in the body and push the headlamp straight back into place.
- 🔧 From inside the engine bay, push the slide-lock back down until it’s fully seated.
- 🔧 Reinstall the two 10 mm bolts and snug them down. Typical torque is about 5–7 N·m (45–60 in-lb) – just firm with a small ratchet, not “gorilla tight.”
Step 12 – Reinstall the grille
- 🔧 Position the grille in front of the truck and line up the lower clips with the slots in the bumper/fascia.
- 🔧 Push the grille straight in until all lower clips snap into place.
- 🔧 Reinstall the top plastic clips and any 10 mm bolts you removed. Push clip centers down to lock them.
Final Checks ✅
- 🔧 Turn the ignition to RUN (engine can be off).
- 🔧 Turn on the parking lights and check that the front amber lamps are on.
- 🔧 Activate the left and right turn signals and hazard lights. Confirm:
- Both front turn signals flash at normal speed.
- No “hyperflash” (very fast blinking) on the dash.
- 🔧 Walk around the truck and make sure the headlamps and other lights still work and the headlamp assemblies sit evenly with no gaps.
Tips & Tricks 🧠
- 💡 Replace bulbs in pairs (left and right) so they match in brightness and color.
- 💡 If a bulb doesn’t light, remove it, rotate it 180°, and reinstall—it’s a dual-contact wedge and must seat correctly.
- 💡 If you ever see moisture inside the headlamp after this, the socket may not be fully locked or the housing seal may be pinched.
