🔧 Highlander - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Highlander’s front turn signal is housed inside the headlight assembly. On some versions it’s a replaceable twist-out bulb; on others it’s a sealed LED that isn’t serviced as a simple bulb.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the headlight area cool if you were just driving.
- ⚠️ If you jack up the front, support it with jack stands on solid ground.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch a halogen bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life).

- Fender liner clips - Qty: 4
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the steering wheel fully away from the side you’re working on (gives more room at the fender liner).
- If you plan to remove the wheel for more room, loosen lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm the correct side and bulb style
- Turn the hazard lights ON briefly to confirm which front turn signal is out, then turn hazards OFF.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to look behind the headlight for a twist-lock socket and wiring connector.
- If you see a socket you can twist out, continue to Step 2.
- If there is no removable socket and the turn signal is part of a sealed LED unit, skip to Step 9 (LED note).
Step 2: Create access (choose the easiest method)
- Method A (often enough space): Access from above/behind the headlight with a flashlight.
- Method B (more room, beginner-friendly): Pull back the fender liner at that front corner (Steps 3-5).
Step 3: Lift the front corner (Method B)
- Use a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift at the front jacking point.
- Place jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) under a safe support point and lower onto the stand.
Step 4: Remove the wheel (Method B, optional but helps)
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2" drive torque wrench to remove the lug nuts and wheel.
- On reassembly: Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Pull back the front fender liner (Method B)
- Remove clips/screws along the front edge of the liner using a trim clip remover (specialty) and Phillips screwdriver #2.
- A trim clip remover is a forked pry tool.
- If a clip pin is stubborn, use needle-nose pliers to pull the center pin out gently.
- Pull the liner back enough to reach behind the headlight.
Step 6: Remove the turn signal socket
- Reach behind the headlight and find the turn signal socket and connector.
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand. If it’s tight, use nitrile gloves for grip (avoid tools that can crack the plastic).
- Pull the socket straight out.
Step 7: Replace the bulb (bulb-type assemblies only)
- Remove the old bulb from the socket (usually pulls straight out).
- Install the new front turn signal bulb firmly into the socket.
- If the bulb is glass, keep your fingers off the glass (use nitrile gloves).
Step 8: Reinstall and test
- Reinsert the socket into the headlight and twist clockwise until fully seated.
- Turn hazards ON and verify the repaired side flashes normally.
- Reinstall the fender liner clips using a trim clip remover (specialty) (press the outer body in, then press the center pin).
- If removed, reinstall the wheel using a 21mm socket and torque wrench (10-150 ft-lbs): Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
Step 9: If your Highlander has a sealed LED front turn signal
- If there is no twist-out bulb socket, the turn signal is typically part of an LED assembly and is not replaced like a bulb.
- At that point, the repair usually involves replacing the LED module (if serviced separately) or the headlight assembly.
- If you want, tell me whether you see a twist-out socket behind the headlight (yes/no) and which side (driver/passenger), and I’ll guide you down the exact correct path.
✅ After Repair
- Verify left and right turn signals flash at a normal speed.
- Verify hazards work and the turn signal indicator on the dash is normal.
- If it still “hyper-flashes,” recheck the bulb seating and connector fit.
