🔧 Forester - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

On your Forester, the front turn signal is either a replaceable amber bulb in the headlamp housing or an LED unit that isn’t bulb-serviceable. I’ll show you the bulb method step-by-step, and I’ll also note what to do if yours is LED.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Let the headlamp area cool if you’ve been driving.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ If you raise the front corner for wheel-well access, support it with jack stands.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb (amber) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the lights and hazard flashers OFF.
  • Open the hood and decide access: from above (engine bay) or from the wheel well.
  • Trim clip tool = forked pry tool for plastic clips.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm you have a replaceable bulb (not an LED-only unit)

  • Use a flashlight and look behind the headlamp for a twist-out bulb socket with wiring.
  • If you do not see any removable bulb socket and the turn signal appears to be an LED strip/module: the turn signal is part of the headlamp assembly and isn’t a simple bulb replacement.

Step 2: Choose your access path

  • Top access (engine bay): Try reaching the turn-signal socket behind the headlamp by hand while using a flashlight.
  • Wheel-well access (more room): Plan to peel back the front fender liner.

Step 3 (Wheel-well access): Safely lift the front corner

  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front corner on the side you’re working on.
  • Set the vehicle onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) before reaching into the wheel well.

Step 4 (Wheel-well access): Peel back the front fender liner

  • Turn the steering wheel away from the side you’re working on to make space.
  • Remove plastic clips/screws at the front edge of the liner using a trim clip removal tool and Phillips screwdriver #2.
  • Gently pull the liner back to see the rear of the headlamp.

Step 5: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Put on nitrile gloves and use a flashlight to locate the turn signal socket (the one leading to the amber turn signal).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it straight out.

Step 6: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand (no tools).
  • Install the new front turn signal bulb (amber) by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
  • Don’t touch the bulb glass.

Step 7: Reinstall the socket and liner

  • Reinsert the socket into the headlamp and twist clockwise by hand until it locks.
  • If you opened the fender liner, reinstall clips/screws using the trim clip removal tool and Phillips screwdriver #2.
  • If lifted, remove jack stands and lower the vehicle using the floor jack.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the ignition ON and test left and right turn signals and hazards.
  • Verify flash rate is normal; rapid flashing usually means the bulb is wrong, not seated, or a connector issue.
  • Walk around and confirm brightness/color match side-to-side.
