1500 Classic - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement 💡

Good news: on your 1500 Classic, the front turn signal bulbs are built into the headlamp assembly and are fairly straightforward to access from under the hood.

Quick check: Do you have basic tools (screwdrivers, a small ratchet set) and a safe, flat place to park? If yes, you’re good to go.

Parts & Bulb Type 📦

  • 💡 Front turn signal bulb (each side): 3157A (amber) dual-filament bulb (wedge base)
  • 💡 Replace both sides so brightness and color match.

Tools & Supplies 🧰

  • 🛠️ 10 mm socket and ratchet (ratchet = small hand tool that turns sockets)
  • 🛠️ Short extension for the ratchet (helps reach bolts)
  • 🛠️ Flat trim tool or flathead screwdriver (for plastic clips if needed)
  • 🧤 Gloves (keeps oils off bulbs and protects your hands)
  • 🧽 Clean cloth or paper towel (to hold the new bulb if not using gloves)

Safety First ⚠️

  • ⚠️ Park on a flat surface, set the parking brake, and put the transmission in PARK.
  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and lights off.
  • ⚠️ Let the headlamp area cool if you were just driving; it can be hot.

Accessing the Headlamp Assembly 🔧

You’ll remove the headlamp unit just enough to reach the bulb socket from behind.

  1. Open the hood 🔓
    • Pull the hood release inside the cab, then release the safety latch at the front and raise the hood. Use the hood prop rod if equipped.
  2. Remove the upper headlamp bolts 🔩
    • Locate the headlamp on the side you’re working on.
    • On top of the headlamp (under the hood), you’ll see two 10 mm bolts holding the headlamp to the radiator support.
    • Use the 10 mm socket and ratchet to remove these two bolts. Set them aside somewhere safe.
  3. Release the headlamp from the fender side 📏
    • The outer side of the headlamp (toward the fender) is held by a ball-and-socket style locating pin (a plastic peg that snaps into a socket).
    • Stand in front of the headlamp, place one hand on the top and one on the side.
    • Pull the headlamp straight forward with a firm, steady tug. Don’t yank up or down; straight forward helps release the pin without breaking it.
    • You may feel it “pop” free. That’s normal.
  4. Pull the headlamp forward gently 🫳
    • Once the locating pin releases, pull the headlamp forward a few inches.
    • Do not pull too far; the wiring harness is still connected at the back.

Removing the Turn Signal Bulb 💡

The front turn signal is the lower/outer bulb in the headlamp assembly.

  1. Locate the turn signal socket
    • Look at the back of the headlamp. You’ll see several bulb sockets.
    • The turn signal/parking lamp socket is usually the larger socket toward the bottom/outer corner of the headlamp.
  2. Remove the socket 🔁
    • Grip the socket firmly.
    • Rotate it about ¼ turn counterclockwise (to the left) until it stops.
    • Pull the socket straight out of the headlamp housing.
  3. Remove the old bulb
    • The 3157 bulb is a wedge bulb (it just pushes in and pulls out, no twist on the bulb itself).
    • Hold the socket and pull the bulb straight out of the socket.
    • If it’s stuck, wiggle it gently while pulling.

Installing the New Bulb ✅

  1. Install the new 3157A bulb
    • Hold the new bulb by the base or with a clean cloth/gloves. Try not to touch the glass.
    • Align the bulb’s metal contacts with the socket slots.
    • Push the bulb straight into the socket until it seats firmly.
  2. Reinstall the socket into the headlamp
    • Align the tabs on the socket with the slots in the headlamp opening.
    • Insert the socket fully, then rotate ¼ turn clockwise (to the right) until it locks.
    • Make sure it feels snug; a loose socket can cause moisture or poor contact.

Reinstalling the Headlamp Assembly 🔩

  1. Position the headlamp
    • Guide the headlamp back into place, lining up the ball pin on the outer side with its socket in the fender.
    • Push the headlamp straight back until you feel the pin snap into place.
  2. Reinstall the upper bolts
    • Reinstall the two 10 mm bolts on top of the headlamp.
    • Tighten them snugly with the ratchet. Factory spec is about 5–7 N·m (44–62 in-lb), which is just snug, not gorilla tight.

Testing the New Bulb 🔍

  1. Test the turn signals
    • Turn the ignition to RUN (engine can be off).
    • Activate the left or right turn signal for the side you replaced.
    • Check from the front that the bulb flashes normally and is bright.
  2. Test hazard lights
    • Press the hazard switch and confirm both front turn signals flash.

Repeat on the Other Side 🔁

  • 🔁 Repeat the same steps for the other front turn signal so both sides match in brightness and color.

Tips & Tricks 🧠

  • 💡 If the new bulb doesn’t light, remove the socket and check that the bulb is fully seated and the connector is firmly plugged in.
  • 💡 If you ever upgrade to LED bulbs, you may need load resistors (small parts that prevent fast blinking); with standard 3157A bulbs, you don’t need anything extra.

HowToo makes it easy: below this answer you’ll see the correct 3157A bulbs and any tools you might need. You can add them to your cart right from the parts section, with fast shipping so you can finish this job in a day or two.
