🔧 Rogue - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

You’ll be replacing the front turn signal bulbs in the headlight housings on your Rogue. On the 2020 SV with halogen headlights, the bulbs are accessed from behind the headlight through the wheel well liner.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key or key fob from the vehicle before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the headlight area cool if you recently used the lights; bulbs and housings can get hot.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of any bulb with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ If your Rogue has LED front turn signals (no removable bulb), they are part of the headlight assembly and not DIY-replaceable; in that case, replacement requires a full headlight unit.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🛠️ Flathead screwdriver (small)
  • 🛠️ Phillips screwdriver #2
  • 🛠️ Trim clip removal tool (specialty)
  • 🛠️ Work light or flashlight
  • 🛠️ Mechanic gloves
  • 🛠️ Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🔩 Front turn signal bulb (amber, 7440/PY27W type) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs
  • 🔩 Replacement plastic push clips for fender liner - Qty: 4–6 Optional but recommended
  • 🔩 Dielectric grease (bulb socket grease) - Qty: 1 tube

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park the Rogue on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlights and turn signals OFF and remove the key or key fob from the vehicle.
  • Turn the steering wheel fully to the opposite side of the bulb you’re changing:
    • For the left front bulb, turn the steering wheel fully to the right.
    • For the right front bulb, turn the steering wheel fully to the left.
  • This opens space to reach the inner fender liner (the plastic shield inside the wheel arch).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Position the wheel for access

  • Turn the steering wheel fully away from the side you’re working on so the tire moves out of your way.
  • Put the transmission in Park and double-check the parking brake is set.

Step 2: Locate the inner fender liner fasteners

  • Use the work light or flashlight to look inside the wheel well near the front of the tire.
  • Find the plastic inner fender liner and locate the plastic push clips and small screws that hold it to the bumper and fender.
  • These clips are what you’ll loosen to bend the liner back.

Step 3: Remove plastic clips and screws from liner

  • Use the Phillips screwdriver #2 to remove any small screws along the front edge of the inner fender liner.
  • Use the flathead screwdriver (small) or trim clip removal tool (specialty) to gently pry up the centers of the plastic push clips, then pull the clips out completely.
  • Work slowly to avoid breaking clips; they get brittle.
  • Set the clips and screws aside in a safe place; you’ll reuse them if they’re in good shape.

Step 4: Pull back the inner fender liner

  • With the clips and screws removed, gently pull the front portion of the inner fender liner away from the bumper area using your hands.
  • Bend it back just enough to create a gap so you can reach in toward the back of the headlight.
  • Do not force it; only bend as needed.

Step 5: Locate the front turn signal bulb socket

  • Shine the work light or flashlight through the opening you created.
  • Reach in and feel the back of the headlight housing; you will find several bulb sockets.
  • The front turn signal socket is usually the lower outer socket and is larger than the small marker/parking light sockets.
  • If someone can flash the turn signal briefly, you can feel which socket vibrates.

Step 6: Remove the bulb socket from the headlight

  • Grip the bulb socket firmly with one hand.
  • Turn the socket about a quarter turn counterclockwise by hand to unlock it.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the headlight housing.
  • No tools are usually needed here; just your hand strength.

Step 7: Remove the old bulb

  • Hold the socket so you can see the bulb.
  • On this style, the bulb usually pulls straight out of the socket; grip the base and pull firmly but gently.
  • If it feels stuck, wiggle the bulb side to side slightly while pulling.
  • Do not twist the glass; pull from the base.

Step 8: Prepare and install the new bulb

  • Before installing, apply a very small amount of dielectric grease to the bulb’s metal contacts. Dielectric grease is a special nonconductive grease that helps prevent corrosion.
  • Hold the new front turn signal bulb (amber, 7440/PY27W type) by its plastic base, not the glass.
  • Push the new bulb straight into the socket until it fully seats and feels snug.
  • If it feels loose, remove and reinsert until it clicks in place.

Step 9: Reinstall the bulb socket into the headlight

  • Align the tabs on the bulb socket with the openings in the headlight housing.
  • Insert the socket straight into the opening.
  • Turn the socket about a quarter turn clockwise by hand until it stops firmly.
  • Make sure it’s fully seated to keep water out.

Step 10: Test the new turn signal

  • Before closing up the liner, turn the ignition to ON (engine can stay off).
  • Activate the turn signal for the side you just replaced and walk to the front of the Rogue.
  • Confirm the front turn signal is blinking normally and at normal speed.
  • If it doesn’t light, turn ignition OFF, reseat the bulb in the socket, and retest.

Step 11: Reattach the inner fender liner

  • Turn the ignition OFF again.
  • Carefully move the inner fender liner back into its original position inside the wheel arch.
  • Align the holes in the liner with the holes in the bumper and fender.
  • Reinstall the plastic push clips by hand, pushing the outer body in first, then pressing the center pin in to lock.
  • Reinstall any screws using the Phillips screwdriver #2. No specific torque spec here; just snug them until the liner is held firmly without deforming the plastic.

Step 12: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 1–11 on the opposite side so both front turn signal bulbs are new.
  • Replacing both keeps brightness and color the same.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn on the hazard lights and walk around the Rogue to confirm both front and rear turn signals flash correctly.
  • Check that the inner fender liners are secure and not rubbing the tires when you turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock.
  • Take a short drive at night if possible to confirm visibility and function.
