🔧 Altima - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

You’ll be replacing the front turn signal bulbs in the headlight housings on your Altima. The bulbs are accessed from behind the headlight, usually through the wheel-well liner or from the engine bay.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-45 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition off and remove the key before working near the headlights.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine bay cool down if you were just driving; parts can be hot.
  • ⚠️ Set the parking brake and keep the car on level ground so it doesn’t roll.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass of new bulbs with bare fingers; oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery terminal if you feel more comfortable working around wiring, but it’s not strictly required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🛠️ Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • 🛠️ Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • 🛠️ Wheel chocks
  • 🛠️ Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • 🛠️ Flathead screwdriver (6mm)
  • 🛠️ Trim clip removal tool (specialty)
  • 🛠️ Ratchet (1/4" drive)
  • 🛠️ 10mm socket
  • 🛠️ Work light or flashlight
  • 🛠️ Mechanic gloves
  • 🛠️ Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🔩 Front turn signal bulb (amber, 7444NA/7440 type) - Qty: 2 (replace in pairs)
  • 🔩 Plastic push clips for front fender liner - Qty: 4–6 (optional, in case any break)
  • 🔩 Dielectric grease - Qty: 1 small tube

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park the Altima on level ground, apply the parking brake, and put the transmission in Park.
  • Turn off all lights and remove the key from the ignition.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels so the car cannot roll.
  • If you prefer, disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket to avoid any chance of shorting.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the front corner (for better access)

  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Position the floor jack (2-ton) at the front jacking point on the side you’re working on (behind the front wheel, under the pinch weld).
  • Lift the vehicle just enough to give you room to turn the wheel fully and reach the inner fender liner.
  • Set the car down carefully onto a jack stand placed under the pinch weld.

Step 2: Turn the front wheel for access

  • Turn the steering wheel fully away from the side you’re working on to open up space in the wheel well.
  • This makes the plastic fender liner easier to move.

Step 3: Remove fender liner fasteners

  • Use the Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the small screws holding the front edge of the plastic fender liner to the bumper and fender.
  • Use the trim clip removal tool or a flathead screwdriver (6mm) to gently pry out the plastic push clips.
  • Set all screws and clips aside in a small container so you don’t lose them.

Step 4: Pull back the fender liner

  • Gently pull the front section of the plastic fender liner back toward the tire to create an opening.
  • Use one hand to hold the liner back and the other to reach inside toward the back of the headlight housing.
  • Do not bend the liner sharply; it can crack.

Step 5: Locate the front turn signal socket

  • Use a work light or flashlight to look inside the opening.
  • Find the bulb socket near the outer corner of the headlight; the turn signal socket is usually a larger, gray or black plastic piece with wires leading to it.
  • If needed, gently move any nearby harnesses with your hand, but do not pull hard on wires.

Step 6: Remove the bulb socket

  • Grip the turn signal bulb socket firmly by hand.
  • Rotate the socket about a quarter turn counterclockwise.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the headlight housing.
  • Do not force it; wiggle gently if stuck.

Step 7: Remove the old bulb

  • Hold the socket and pull the old bulb straight out with your fingers.
  • If it’s tight, gently wiggle the bulb side to side while pulling.
  • Inspect the socket for any melted plastic or corrosion; if you see green or white buildup, clean lightly and use a tiny amount of dielectric grease.

Step 8: Install the new bulb

  • Without touching the glass, remove the new turn signal bulb (7444NA/7440 amber) from its package.
  • If you touch the glass, wipe it clean with a lint-free cloth.
  • Insert the bulb straight into the socket until it seats firmly.
  • Apply a very light smear of dielectric grease on the metal contacts if available.

Step 9: Reinstall the bulb socket into the headlight

  • Line up the tabs on the bulb socket with the slots in the headlight opening.
  • Insert the socket fully, then turn it clockwise about a quarter turn until it stops and feels locked.
  • If it doesn’t seat, remove and realign the tabs.

Step 10: Test the new bulb

  • Temporarily let the fender liner hang loose for a moment.
  • Turn the ignition to ON (engine can stay off).
  • Use the turn signal stalk to activate the signal on the side you replaced.
  • Walk to the front of the car and confirm the turn signal flashes normally (not very fast).
  • Turn the ignition back off.

Step 11: Reattach the fender liner

  • Push the plastic fender liner back into its original position.
  • Install the screws with the Phillips #2 screwdriver and reinstall the plastic push clips using your fingers or the trim clip removal tool to press them in fully.
  • Replace any broken clips with new ones.

Step 12: Lower the vehicle

  • Use the floor jack to lift slightly at the same jacking point and remove the jack stand.
  • Lower the car slowly to the ground.
  • Repeat Steps 1–11 on the other side to replace the second front turn signal bulb.

Step 13: Final full lighting check

  • Turn the ignition to ON.
  • Check left and right turn signals, hazard flashers, and parking lights from the front of the car.
  • Make sure both sides flash at the same speed and brightness.

✅ After Repair

  • Verify that both front turn signals and hazard lights work correctly.
  • Check around the fender liner and bumper for any loose or misaligned plastic panels.
  • Take a short drive at night and confirm visibility and proper turn signal operation.
  • Listen for any rubbing or scraping noises near the front wheels that might indicate a loose liner.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
