How to Replace Front Turn Signal Bulbs on a 2020 Ford Escape
Step-by-step DIY guide with tools, parts list, safety tips, and testing instructions for front turn signal bulb replacement

🔧 Escape - Front turn signal bulb replacement
You’ll be replacing the front turn signal bulbs inside the headlamp housings. On your Escape, they’re accessed from behind the headlight through the wheel well liner, so you don’t have to remove the whole bumper.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30–45 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔹Always switch the ignition off and remove the key before working near lights.
- 🔹Let the headlamp area cool if the lights were just on; the housing can get hot.
- 🔹Turn the front wheels away from the side you’re working on for more room.
- 🔹Avoid touching the glass part of the new bulb with bare fingers; oil can shorten bulb life.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 🔹Flathead screwdriver (small)
- 🔹Trim removal tool (plastic)
- 🔹1/4" drive ratchet
- 🔹7mm socket
- 🔹Work light or flashlight
- 🔹Mechanic gloves
- 🔹Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- 🔹Front turn signal bulb (amber, 7440/PY21W type) - Qty: 2 (replace in pairs)
- 🔹Wheel well liner push-pin clips - Qty: 4–6 (optional, in case any break)
- 🔹Dielectric grease (for bulb contacts) - Qty: 1 small tube
📋 Before You Begin
- 🔹Park the Escape on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🔹Turn the ignition off and remove the key or key fob from the vehicle.
- 🔹Turn the front wheels fully to the opposite side you’re working on (for the left/front bulb, turn wheel full right; for the right/front bulb, turn wheel full left).
- 🔹Put on safety glasses and gloves.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Position the vehicle and choose a side
- 🔹Decide which front turn signal you’re replacing, or plan to do both while you’re there.
- 🔹Turn the steering wheel so the tire turns away from the side you’re working on to give more space inside the wheel well.
- 🔹Switch off all lights and confirm the turn signals are off.
Step 2: Open access in the wheel well liner
- 🔹Use the flathead screwdriver to gently pry the center pins of the plastic clips in the front section of the wheel well liner, just behind the bumper.
- 🔹If your Escape has a small service door in the liner: use the trim removal tool to pop it open. A trim tool is a plastic lever used to remove clips without damage.
- 🔹If there are small screws: use the 7mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove them and pull the liner back slightly.
- Work slowly to avoid cracking the liner.
Step 3: Locate the front turn signal bulb socket
- 🔹Shine the work light or flashlight into the opening you’ve made in the wheel well liner.
- 🔹Look at the rear of the headlamp housing; the turn signal socket is usually the lower or outermost socket with a small wiring connector attached.
- 🔹The socket will be round and made of plastic, with small tabs or “ears” you can grip.
Step 4: Remove the bulb socket from the headlamp
- 🔹Grip the bulb socket firmly with your hand.
- 🔹Turn the socket about 1/4 turn counterclockwise by hand until it stops. Counterclockwise means turning left.
- 🔹Pull the socket straight back out of the headlamp housing.
- Do not force; wiggle gently if tight.
Step 5: Remove the old bulb
- 🔹Hold the socket in one hand and the bulb base in the other.
- 🔹On a wedge-style bulb (7440), pull the bulb straight out of the socket. It may be snug but should slide out.
- 🔹Inspect the socket for any melted plastic, corrosion, or discoloration.
- Replace the socket if you see melting or heavy corrosion.
Step 6: Install the new bulb
- 🔹If you have dielectric grease, put a tiny dab on the metal contacts inside the socket (not on the glass). Dielectric grease helps prevent corrosion on electrical connections.
- 🔹Hold the new front turn signal bulb by the base, not the glass. If you touch the glass, wipe it clean with a dry, lint-free cloth.
- 🔹Push the new bulb straight into the socket until it is fully seated and snug.
Step 7: Reinstall the bulb socket into the headlamp
- 🔹Line up the tabs on the bulb socket with the slots in the headlamp opening.
- 🔹Insert the socket straight into the opening.
- 🔹Turn the socket about 1/4 turn clockwise until it stops and locks in place.
- Make sure it feels solid; no wobble.
Step 8: Test the new bulb
- 🔹Before closing the wheel well liner, turn the ignition to ON (engine can stay off).
- 🔹Activate the turn signal or hazard lights for that side.
- 🔹Go to the front of the Escape and confirm the new bulb lights up and flashes at the normal speed (not very fast).
- 🔹Switch everything off again once confirmed.
Step 9: Reattach the wheel well liner
- 🔹Bring the wheel well liner or access door back into its original position.
- 🔹Reinstall any screws using the 7mm socket and ratchet.
- 🔹Reinstall the plastic push-pin clips by pushing the outer ring in first, then pushing the center pin flush to lock them.
- 🔹Replace any damaged clips with new ones from your clip kit.
Step 10: Repeat on the other side
- 🔹Turn the steering wheel the opposite direction to access the other side.
- 🔹Repeat Steps 2–9 for the other front turn signal.
- Always replace bulbs in pairs for even brightness.
✅ After Repair
- 🔹Turn on the hazard lights and walk around the vehicle to confirm both front turn signals work and flash at the same speed as the rear signals.
- 🔹Check that the wheel well liners sit correctly and no clips or screws are missing.
- 🔹Take a short drive at night and confirm the turn signals are clearly visible.
