🔧 Highlander - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
This repair replaces the front turn signal bulbs in your Highlander. A burned-out turn signal bulb can make lane changes unsafe and may cause the turn signal indicator on the dash to flash faster than normal.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-30 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the headlight switch OFF before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the front lamp area cool if the lights were recently on.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of the new bulb with bare fingers. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb replacement.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Highlander on level ground.
- Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
- Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key from the vehicle.
- Turn the exterior light switch OFF.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- A trim clip removal tool is a small fork-shaped tool used to lift plastic clips without breaking them.
- Replace both front turn signal bulbs if one has failed. The other bulb is usually close to the end of its life.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood
- Use your hands to pull the hood release inside the cabin.
- Use your fingers to release the secondary hood latch at the front of the hood.
- Raise the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod if equipped.
- Use a flashlight to look behind the headlamp assembly on the side you are repairing.
Step 2: Locate the Front Turn Signal Bulb Socket
- Use a flashlight to find the turn signal bulb socket at the rear of the front headlamp assembly.
- The front turn signal socket is separate from the low beam and high beam sockets.
- Look for the socket that lines up with the amber turn signal section at the front outer area of the lamp.
- Work slowly; space is tight.
Step 3: Move Any Plastic Covering If Needed
- If a plastic radiator cover or access flap blocks your hand, use a trim clip removal tool to lift the plastic push clips.
- A push clip is a reusable plastic fastener with a center pin that expands the clip when pressed down.
- If the center pin is tight, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to gently lift the center pin first.
- Set the clips on a shop towel so they do not roll away.
Step 4: Remove the Bulb Socket
- Use your hand to grip the front turn signal bulb socket.
- Turn the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the socket straight rearward out of the headlamp housing.
- Do not pull on the wires.
Step 5: Remove the Old Bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves before touching the bulb.
- Use a shop towel to hold the socket steady.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- If the bulb is stuck, gently wiggle it while pulling straight outward.
Step 6: Install the New Bulb
- Use nitrile gloves to handle the new front turn signal bulb.
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Do not force it at an angle.
- If you accidentally touch the bulb glass, clean it with a dry shop towel before installation.
Step 7: Reinstall the Bulb Socket
- Use your hand to insert the bulb and socket back into the headlamp housing.
- Align the tabs on the socket with the slots in the housing.
- Turn the socket clockwise about a quarter turn until it locks.
- No torque spec applies because this socket is hand-tight only.
Step 8: Reinstall Any Removed Covers Or Clips
- Use your hands to place the plastic cover or access flap back into position.
- Use your fingers to reinstall the plastic push clips.
- Press the clip body into the hole first, then press the center pin flush.
- If a clip does not lock, remove it with the trim clip removal tool and reinstall it straight.
Step 9: Test the Turn Signal
- Use the turn signal stalk to switch on the left or right turn signal.
- Walk to the front of your Highlander and confirm the new bulb flashes brightly.
- Use the hazard switch to test both front turn signal bulbs together.
- If the bulb does not light, turn the lights OFF, remove the bulb, rotate it 180 degrees if applicable, reseat it, and test again.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Confirm the dashboard turn signal indicator flashes at normal speed.
- ✅ Confirm both front turn signals and hazard lights work.
- ✅ Make sure all plastic covers and clips are fully seated.
- ✅ Close the hood securely before driving.
