🔧 CX-5 - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

On your CX-5 Sport, the front turn signal is typically a removable bulb inside the headlamp housing. The job is mostly about getting access to the back of the headlamp, twisting out the bulb socket, and swapping the bulb without touching the glass.

If your front turn signal is an LED strip (no removable bulb), the bulb is not serviceable separately—tell me and I’ll guide you on the correct fix.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Let the headlamp area cool; bulbs and housings can get hot.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ If you work through the wheel-well, keep hands clear of sharp plastic edges.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Clean paper towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A/7440NA type) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs.
  • Dielectric grease (optional) - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight/turn-signal stalk to OFF.
  • Open the hood and locate the back side of each headlamp.
  • Quick check: look for a round twist-lock bulb socket on the back of the headlamp (this confirms it’s a replaceable bulb).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Find the turn signal socket behind the headlamp

  • Use a flashlight to look behind the headlamp assembly.
  • Identify the turn signal bulb socket (usually a round plastic socket with a wiring connector).
  • If access is tight, go to Step 2 for the wheel-well access method.

Step 2: Create access (wheel-well method if your hand won’t fit)

  • Turn the front wheels away from the side you’re working on (this makes space).
  • Use a trim clip removal tool and/or small flathead screwdriver to remove the plastic clips holding the front edge of the fender liner.
  • If equipped with screws, remove them with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
  • Gently pull the liner back just enough to reach the back of the headlamp. Don’t crease the liner.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • Grip the socket firmly and twist it counterclockwise by hand until it unlocks.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the headlamp.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Put on nitrile gloves.
  • Remove the old bulb by pulling it straight out of the socket.
  • Install the new front turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A/7440NA type) by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • If you’re using it, apply a tiny smear of dielectric grease (optional) to the socket seal area (not on the bulb glass).

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and close up

  • Insert the socket back into the headlamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • If you pulled the fender liner back, reinstall the clips with the trim clip removal tool (and any screws with the Phillips #2 screwdriver).
  • Wipe fingerprints off surrounding areas using a clean paper towel.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition to ON and test left and right turn signals.
  • Verify the blink speed is normal (a fast blink usually means a bulb isn’t working or isn’t seated).
  • Turn on the hazards and walk around to confirm both front signals match brightness and color.
