🔧 Sequoia - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Sequoia’s front turn signal bulb sits inside the headlamp housing. The job is usually quick: you access the bulb socket from behind the headlight, twist it out, swap the bulb, and test.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🧤 Turn the lights OFF and let the headlamp area cool before reaching behind it.
  • 🧯 Do not touch the glass of a halogen bulb with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
  • 🔌 No battery disconnect is required, but keep the key OFF to avoid shorting anything.
  • 🧱 If you raise the front end for access, support it with jack stands before working.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 3" extension for 1/4" ratchet
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb (amber) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • 🔦 Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the bulb sockets at the back of each headlamp.
  • 📝 If you’re unsure which bulb to buy: remove the old bulb first and read the bulb number printed on its base (common formats look like “7440”).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm the correct socket (turn signal)

  • Open the hood and look behind the headlamp assembly using a flashlight.
  • Identify the turn signal socket (it’s the socket that feeds the amber turn signal function).
  • If unsure, turn hazards on briefly. Then switch them OFF before removing anything.

Step 2: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Reach behind the headlamp and grasp the socket firmly (use nitrile gloves for grip).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise about a quarter-turn and pull it straight out.

Step 3: Remove the old bulb

  • Pull the bulb straight out of the socket (no twisting on most wedge-style bulbs).
  • Check the bulb number stamped on the base and match your replacement.

Step 4: Install the new bulb

  • With nitrile gloves on, press the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • If the bulb is halogen glass, avoid touching the glass. If you accidentally touch it, wipe it clean and dry before installing.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket

  • Insert the socket back into the headlamp housing.
  • Twist clockwise until it locks snugly by hand (no tools needed).

Step 6: If access is too tight, use the wheel-well access path (alternate method)

  • Chock wheels, then raise the front corner with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and support it with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove the plastic clips holding the front fender liner edge.
  • If needed, remove small fasteners with a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 3" extension.
  • Pull the liner back just enough to reach the rear of the headlamp, then repeat Steps 2–5.
  • Reinstall liner clips/fasteners securely by hand.

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Replace the other front turn signal bulb the same way (best practice is to replace in pairs).

✅ After Repair

  • 🔁 Turn the ignition ON and test left and right turn signals, plus hazard flashers.
  • 👀 Walk around and confirm the front turn signals blink normally (not fast).
  • 🧩 If you used the wheel-well method, recheck that all liner clips are fully seated.
