🔧 RAV4 - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
You’ll be replacing the front turn signal bulbs inside the headlight housings on your RAV4. The sockets are reached from under the hood, behind each headlight.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20–40 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Turn the ignition off and remove the key; make sure the turn signals and headlights are switched off.
- 🧯 Let the engine bay cool if you’ve been driving; some parts can be hot.
- 🧤 Wear safety glasses and gloves to protect your eyes and hands.
- 🔌 You do not need to disconnect the battery for this job, but avoid pulling on wiring.
- 📏 Only touch the bulb base, not the glass, to avoid shortening bulb life.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:

- 🧼 Isopropyl alcohol wipes - Qty: 1 pack
📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Park the RAV4 on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🔦 Open the hood using the interior hood release, then lift and secure the hood prop rod.
- 💡 Identify the front turn signal sockets: they are at the outer upper corner of each headlight, accessed from behind in the engine bay.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Gain access to the rear of the headlight
- On the driver side, you’ll see the back of the headlight fairly open; on the passenger side, the washer fluid neck may be close to the socket.
- If access is tight on the passenger side, use a 10mm socket with 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the single bolt holding the washer fluid filler neck bracket, then gently move the neck aside for more space. Torque to 5–7 Nm (44–62 in-lbs) when reinstalling later.
- Look for a small round socket with wires going in.
Step 2: Locate the front turn signal socket
- Use a work light or flashlight to see the back of the headlight.
- The turn signal socket is usually a gray or black plastic piece with two wires, toward the outer side of the headlight (closest to the fender).
- Compare both sides to be sure you have the same style socket.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal socket
- Grip the plastic socket firmly by hand.
- Turn the socket about a quarter turn counterclockwise to unlock it. No tool is needed; just your hand.
- Pull the socket straight out of the headlight housing.
- Do not pull on the wires; hold the plastic.
Step 4: Remove the old bulb
- Hold the socket in one hand with the bulb pointing away from you.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the socket with your other hand. If it feels stuck, gently rock it side-to-side while pulling.
- If the bulb base is stuck, you can gently pry at the base with a small flathead screwdriver, but avoid damaging the plastic socket.
Step 5: Prepare the new bulb
- Open the package for the new front turn signal bulb (7440 or 7440A amber).
- A clear 7440 bulb should be labeled "amber" or have an amber coating; your RAV4 requires amber turn signals.
- Wipe the new bulb’s glass with an isopropyl alcohol wipe and dry with a shop towel if you touched it with bare fingers.
- Apply a tiny dab of dielectric grease to the bulb’s metal base contacts to help prevent corrosion.
Step 6: Install the new bulb into the socket
- Align the bulb’s base tabs with the matching slots in the socket.
- Push the bulb straight into the socket until it clicks or feels firmly seated.
- If it wiggles loosely, it’s not fully seated.
Step 7: Reinstall the socket into the headlight
- Line up the socket tabs with the opening in the headlight housing.
- Insert the socket straight in until it is fully seated.
- Turn the socket clockwise about a quarter turn until it stops; this locks it in place. No specific torque spec; hand-tight only.
- Do not overtighten; it’s just plastic.
Step 8: Reinstall any moved components
- If you moved the washer fluid filler neck, line its bracket back up with the mounting hole.
- Install the bolt using the 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
- Torque to 5–7 Nm (44–62 in-lbs).
Step 9: Repeat for the other side
- Repeat Steps 1–8 on the other front turn signal so both sides match in brightness and color.
- Always replace bulbs in pairs for even light output.
Step 10: Test the new bulbs
- Close the hood enough that it’s safe to walk around the front, or keep it open if you stay clear of moving parts.
- Turn the ignition to ON (engine can be off).
- Use the turn signal stalk to activate the left and then the right turn signals.
- Walk to the front and confirm each side is bright, steady (normal flash speed), and the correct amber color.
✅ After Repair
- 🧪 Check that both front and rear turn signals flash at a normal rate; a very fast flash usually means a bulb is out.
- 🚗 Take a short drive at dusk or night and verify visibility of the front signals in traffic.
- 🧴 Wipe off any fingerprints or smudges on the headlight lens with a clean shop towel.
- 📸 Optional: Have a friend watch the lights while you signal left and right to double-check brightness.
