🔧 Prius - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
On your Prius, the front turn signal bulbs sit inside the headlamp area. The job is usually done from under the hood by removing a bulb socket, swapping the bulb, then reinstalling and testing.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the car OFF and remove the key fob from the vehicle area.
- ⚠️ Let the headlamp area cool before reaching in near bulbs.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ No hybrid high-voltage service is required for this repair.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which bulb you’re changing
- Turn the hazard lights ON briefly, then OFF, to see which front bulb is flashing.
- Use a flashlight to look into the headlamp area from above so you know which side you’re working on first.
Step 2: Access the rear of the headlamp housing
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Use a flashlight to locate the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the headlamp assembly (it will have a twist-lock socket).
- If access is tight, remove the nearby upper cover/air duct fasteners using a trim clip removal tool, then remove any 10mm bolts with a 10mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 6" socket extension.
- Tip: Take a quick photo before removal.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Grip the socket firmly and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn to unlock it.
- Pull the socket straight out.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Install the new front turn signal bulb (amber) by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
- Do not touch the bulb glass; handle it with nitrile gloves.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket
- Insert the socket back into the headlamp opening.
- Rotate clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks in place.
Step 6: Reinstall any removed covers/ducting
- Reinstall any 10mm bolts using a 10mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 6" socket extension.
- Reinstall any clips with the trim clip removal tool.
- Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs) for small 10mm bolts on plastic brackets/covers.
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 2–6 for the opposite headlamp.
✅ After Repair
- Turn hazards ON and confirm both front turn signals flash normally.
- Check that the bulb is amber and the flashing rate is normal (fast flashing usually means a bulb is still out).
- If a bulb does not light, remove the socket and confirm the bulb is fully seated.
