🔧 C-HR - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

On your C-HR, the front turn signal bulb sits in the headlight housing and is usually accessed from behind the headlight through the front wheel-well liner. You’ll remove a small section of liner, twist the bulb socket out, swap the bulb, then reassemble.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • ⚠️ Let the headlight area cool; bulbs/housings can be hot.
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands if a wheel comes off.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass of a new bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 21mm socket
  • 1/2" drive ratchet
  • Torque wrench (20-150 ft-lbs)
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Work light
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulbs (amber) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, turn the steering wheel away from the side you’re working on (more room in the wheel well), and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • If you’ll remove the front wheel: slightly loosen the lug nuts first using a 21mm socket and 1/2" drive ratchet.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the front corner (optional but easier)

  • Use a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift the front corner you’re working on.
  • Set the vehicle onto jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum).
  • If removing the wheel, remove lug nuts using a 21mm socket and 1/2" drive ratchet.

Step 2: Remove the wheel-well liner fasteners at the front

  • In the front section of the fender liner, remove the plastic clips using a trim clip removal tool.
  • Remove any screws/bolts in that same front section using a Phillips screwdriver #2 or 10mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • Pull the liner back just enough to reach the back of the headlight. Only peel back what you need.

Step 3: Locate the front turn signal bulb socket

  • Use a work light and look behind the headlight assembly for the turn signal socket (a twist-lock socket going into the headlight).
  • Turn signals are usually the outer/amber section of the headlight. If you’re unsure, have someone switch the hazards on briefly to confirm location.

Step 4: Remove the socket and bulb

  • Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it straight out.
  • Pull the bulb straight out of the socket (no twisting on most Toyota wedge bulbs).
  • Check the old bulb’s number printed on the base so you can match the replacement exactly.

Step 5: Install the new bulb and reinstall the socket

  • Wear nitrile gloves and push the new bulb fully into the socket.
  • Reinsert the socket into the headlight and twist clockwise until it locks snugly by hand.

Step 6: Test the turn signal before reassembly

  • Turn the ignition to ON and test that side’s turn signal and hazards.
  • If it doesn’t work, turn ignition OFF, remove the socket again, and make sure the bulb is fully seated.

Step 7: Reinstall the wheel-well liner and wheel

  • Push the liner back into place and reinstall screws/bolts using a Phillips screwdriver #2 or 10mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • Reinstall clips using a trim clip removal tool to position them, then press them in by hand.
  • If the wheel was removed, install lug nuts using a 21mm socket and 1/2" drive ratchet.
  • Lower the vehicle with the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum).
  • Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench (20-150 ft-lbs): Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).

âś… After Repair

  • Verify both left and right front turn signals flash at a normal speed.
  • Check hazards, and confirm the bulb socket area is dry and fully seated (keeps moisture out).
  • If the signal “hyper-flashes” (very fast), the bulb may be wrong type or not seated.
